Mitt Romney must have ignored his fortune cookie: When reaching for shiny object, make sure you are not standing on cliff.
Recently, the Romney campaign dismissed foreign policy as a shiny object, a trifle, a mere bagatelle.

So when news came about the breaching of the security wall around our embassy in Egypt and the terrible killing of our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi, Ill bet you had the same thought I did: If only we had a well-traveled businessman in the White House! If only we had a guy who speaks French! If only we had a guy who could use his deep understanding of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and apply those lessons to Libya and Egypt, then I would feel safer tonight!
As I said, one does not know whether to laugh or cry.
As it was, Romney used none of his formidable foreign policy skills in commenting on the twin crises. Instead, having just spent days rehearsing for his upcoming debates with Barack Obama, Romney was still in debate mode: answer instantly, do not pause, do not take time to think.
