1. I know some middle-class youngsters who think they very much want to see the whole thing crash

and burn, "so we can start over". This is one of the reasons that I personally am so sensitive to the "there's no difference between Republicans and Democrats, so don't vote" line. It's not just a hypothetical to some people out there. It's something they want very much. The ones I know are young and have a somewhat casual attitude about meth, some of them. I've never heard one of them mention the possibility that anyone who doesn't deserve it will be hurt or destroyed by their preference to "start over" this way. They tend to be middle and upper-middle class and some of them have wealthy friends, who like to protest police drunk-driver road blocks.

They're probably really only a minority of the young people I know, but I think their thinking on this is a product of our more widely spread "disposable culture" and its emphasis on instant-whatever, revolution in this case. Many young people don't want to do the long work of change. It's either BLIND impatience or desperation that makes them think the Teahadist crash-and-burn path is the best way to go.
