MSNBC ran a piece earlier today. They were interviewing patrons at a bar. One was a nurse celebrating her ability to decompress after a stressful day at work. Employers might want to screen her frequently for her COVID-19 status, before she infects patients. She might also have an alcohol problem as well.
A second patron, apparently feeling a little inebriated, said he drove to the bar and parked in the parking lot.
My suggestion is to place some police units outside the bars, looking for potential drunk drivers. It might clear out the bars fairly quickly. Cant arrest them for social distancing, but you can for drunk driving.
If they dont care for their safety from COVID-19, I seriously doubt these bar customers would think about having a designated driver.

(964 posts)They could move from place to place. Remember the DUI checkpoints that some police place on weekends and holidays.

(24 posts)And you're suggesting she has an ETOH problem? Seems a bit over the top.
If anyone should be allowed to decompress it should be docs and nurses. In a socially distant manner of course.
Police already routine patrol around/near bars/clubs/hotspots looking for drunk drivers.

(4,613 posts)Last time I checked it was still perfectly acceptable to "decompress" at home. Far safer too, even without a pandemic.

(24 posts)I did add with proper social distancing.
*edit*
My only issue was to suggest this nurse has a drinking problem. She could also have a drinking problem at home.

(153,138 posts)it seems odd that such a person would ignore the standard advice regarding this virus

(24 posts)But you and the others are correct. This is a lapse of judgement. But I still maintain that it does mean/ indicate she has an ETOH problem.

(964 posts)But appearing on TV against sound medical advice might lead to her supervisors questioning her decisions at work.

(964 posts)... she then goes on Faux News and claims that her freedoms were violated. Instant victim. Runs for office in some isolated Podunk county. Becomes a RW celebrity.

(24 posts)I guess that depends on the level of office, maybe.

(16,829 posts)Everyone should get inebriated at home, and give their car keys to a sober friend or relative. Then they can have a zoom meeting with all the other drunks in their neighborhood.

(2,958 posts)Unfortunately. A DUI is almost a rite of passage for some people here.

But cops usually don't need probable cause because they're more than happy to make shit up to initiate a traffic stop.
But yeah, I see your point.
Then again, the cops are probably on board with this, I'm sure many of them are chump supporting drunks too.

(6,078 posts)imagine there are enough cops in this state to cover half the bars lol
I think of it as natural selection, although shame on that nurse she should know better.

(11,605 posts)That she and her boyfriend, an essential worker who has to ride the NYC subway to get to work, that they should do their patriotic duty and go visit some of these bars, preferably in the reddest part of Wisconsin. If he is a carrier, it's a win-win - the bar owners get some much-needed extra business, and their patrons get a step closer to the herd immunity they've been clamoring for. And if there are a few fewer Trump voters around in the closest state from 2016 come November, well, that's just an unfortunate consequence.
