that was the name of the building in which the Democratic National Committee was housed, and thus where the break-in took place: the Watergate Office Building. The Watergate Complex has 6 buildings, including coop apartments, a hotel, and the office building.

The “gate” was detached and came to b added to other political scandals. It has no meaning; it’s just a tag that has come to indicate “scandal.”
