Ervin McKinness, a 21-year-old aspiring rapper, tweeted about driving drunk at 120 mph minutes before dying in a fiery one-car crash that killed the rapper and four others.
McKinness posted the now-ominous tweets about speeding while driving drunk on the account @ink2flashyy at 1:19 a.m. on Sept. 2.
"YOLO" is an acronym for "You Only Live Once." The phrase was made popular by singer Drake, who used "YOLO" in his song "The Motto."
Another tweet reportedly posted by McKinness talked about drinking and driving. The tweet read, "Driving tweeting sipping the cup f*** yolo I'm turning it up," according to the Daily Mail. This tweet has since been deleted but retweeted on the account.
At 1:40 a.m., McKinness died in a crash in Ontario, Calif., at Creekside Drive and Haven Avenue when the 2005 Nissan Sentra ran a red light, skidded out of control and slammed into a wall, according to the San Bernardino County Sun. The car wound up in the backyard of a home. Marquell Bogan, 23, and Dylan George, 20, both of Ontario; Jonathan Watson, 21, of San Bernardino; and JaJuan Bennett, 23, of Rancho Cucamonga were also killed in the crash.
All were pronounced dead at the scene except Bogan, who was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to CBS News

(53,998 posts)I find that relevant. If the publicity this story gets can wake up some young adults to the reality of drink driving, that's a good thing. Telling us that this tragic young man had career ambitions is an important facet of the story.

(22,990 posts)As you yourself say, in so many words, "rapper" was a profession he aspired to, not one that he occupied.
Why doesn't the article share the careers of the other dead occupants? Not sensationalistic enough, my guess.

(22,990 posts)It's less journalistic, and more let's make insensitive wisecrack headlines.
I mean, have you ever before seen precious headline space taken up by the job description of someone killed in a traffic collision?
edit: for those thinking "James Dean, Lady Di, duh!", etc, note that their actual name was in the headlines, not just a job description, as was the case here with Tweeter Ervin McKinness.

(10,340 posts)If he had been an "aspiring country singer", "aspiring artist", "aspiring novelist" etc - would anyone have felt the need to include their profession in the headline? More than likely not, such a detail would have just been part of the main story itself.
Also doubtful that it would have made such headlines if it had been an aspiring country singer, artist, novelist, etc.
But RAPPER - the media loves to feed stereotypes, don't they

YOLO... and YODO.

It's well known that a vast proportion of Darwin Awards are preceded by at least one of these phrases. Both said by dumb people trying to impress other dumb people.
I find these stories to be horrific. The fact that five died is five times horrific. Ignorance is not bliss.
Oh! And rap sucks, too.
