When the richest nation in the world can't manage its own economy;
When the nation with the greatest tradition of the rule of law is plagued by unprecedented lawlessness;
When a nation that has been known for a century for equality of opportunity is torn by unprecedented racial violence;
And when the President of the United States cannot travel abroad or to any major city at home without fear of a hostile demonstration -- then it's time for new leadership for the United States of America.
My fellow Americans, tonight I accept the challenge and the commitment to provide that new leadership for America.

If you're tempted to wring your hands with fear that the protests will tip the election to Donald Trump as you believe the 1967-68 riots benefited Richard Nixon, remember this: Richard Nixon ran as an outsider against the existing government, hammering on all of the problems the nation faced and promising to bring new leadership. Donald Trump IS the existing leadership. He and his surrogates CANNOT use Nixon's playbook.
As I've said before, this is NOT 1968. https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213512044

(29,322 posts)1. The 1968 & 1972 elections have no relevance to this years election
A completely different era and people are more partisan.

Thank you.
But that isn't stopping people from treating both years as a blueprint for 2020 - and insisting that we're DOOMED because 1968 and 1972 ...

(4,510 posts)3. The Trumpies are saying Obama is organizing the protests,
he's having bricks brought in and giving all protesters magic ear pieces so they can communicate with each other.
The 42% of the country that has consistently supported Trump will continue to support him. We have to fight for this election like our lives depend on it. Because they do.

You're right - we need to fight like hell for the rest of the country and stop chasing around trying to win over idiots.
