"You cannot love your fellow man if you don't love God."

So says Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick according to this Huff Post piece.

"You cannot love your fellow man if you don’t love God,” he said. “And we have a country where we’ve been working really hard, particularly on the left, to kick God out.”

As Mike Myers' character on "Coffee Talk" used to say: "Discuss among yourselves."

I am a little too upset to talk right now.

34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Wouldn't that be evidence that they loved God? Seems to me that their disregard and outright hatred for a lot of their fellow men and women is a pretty solid indication that they don't give a damn for their God, either.

7. Reverse of what every theologian I know would say
Thu Jun 4, 2020, 09:32 AM
Jun 2020

Every theologian I know would say that this is the antithesis of what Jesus said.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

And of course just a little later

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

A TRUE Christian ( or Buddhist, or Muslim, etc) believes the same basic things. If you don't love your fellow man then you are not loving your God correctly.

People like this make me sick to my stomach as they twist what I believe in for their own political and personal agenda.

As a Buddhist, I don't belief in a creator god. But I certainly do love my fellow humans. I also love animals.

So what? Dan Patrick has to make non-Christians wrong, so he can make himself feel "right" and holier than thou. I haven't seen him demonstrate much compassion for his fellow Texans, when he opposes the expansion of medicaid.

Matthew 7:15-20
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

As some here will know, this is part of Jesus's 'Sermon on the Mount'. Too bad more 'christians' don't actually read ALL of it with their comprehensive skills actually engaged and choose to follow the teachings of Jesus not those false prophet 'evilgelical' profiteers who are so popular.

16. Abou Ben Adhem BY LEIGH HUNT
Thu Jun 4, 2020, 10:12 AM
Jun 2020

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
"What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord."
"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blest,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

Agape, love of man for God (and vicey-versey), is the most important love. Everything flows from that, including Philia, love for your fellow man. In theory, you can have Philia if you don't have Agape.

However, the protestors are displaying Philia in spades, despite a perceived lack of Agape. The entire point is to save the lives of people they don't know. Conservatives who aren't supporting BLM, or a protesting that they can't get a dye job, are not.

Patrick should debate this topic with a African American minister. Or someone of a different faith: a Rabbi, an Imam, a Buddhist Monk...

40. The Bible says the opposite
Thu Jun 4, 2020, 01:18 PM
Jun 2020

As reported in the gospels, Jesus said that the two commandments are to love God with all your heart etc., and to love your neighbor as yourself, and that these commandments are equal. In the First Epistle of John, chapter 4, this principle is taken even further, when the writer suggests that you cannot say that you love God, whom you cannot see, if you do not love your neighbor, whom you do see. In other words, the CONCRETE way to love God IS to love your neighbor. That is how you show whether you love God or not. 1 John 4:12: No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

will lower the boom on Patrick. His sentiment is what is wrong with many (most?) in the Evangelical community today. His twisted scripture means that if we love God we don't have to then do anything for our fellow humans. Just the opposite is true according to the ENTIRE New Testament and much of the Old.

Read 1 John to find a response to this anti-Christian hypocrisy.

Here is a passage from 1 John:

7 Brothers, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. 8 Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shines. 9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. 10 He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and doesn't know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

1 John 2 -11

We are also told to love our enemies and when we have opportunity to do good to all people. We are never told to do evil to anyone.

Patrick is not the anti-christ but he is an anti-Christ.
