Afghan officials: 8 women killed in NATO airstrike

By Rahim Faiez on September 16, 2012

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials say a NATO airstrike killed eight women and girls who were out gathering firewood before dawn Sunday in a remote region on the east of the country. The coalition says it believes only insurgents were hit.

Villagers from Laghman province's Alingar district brought the bodies to the governor's office in the provincial capital, said Sarhadi Zewak, a spokesman for the provincial government.

"They were shouting 'Death to America!' They were condemning the attack," Zewak said.

Seven injured females were brought to area hospitals for treatment, some of them as young as 10 years old, said provincial health director Latif Qayumi.

2. A couple of weeks ago, you said that you would be putting "drone strikes" on the back burner

and lectured those of us who do not.

I am happy to see that you could not keep your heart encased in plaster despite the fact that it is election season.

For me, these actions are so much more disturbing and painful to me BECAUSE they are done by a man we elected, championed and rooted for so much.

In all honesty, I was able to hold it together during the Bush years because I was able to tell myself that it is not who we are as a nation --that Bush was an anomaly, an OTHER.

But my soul was wounded and my faith battered when I saw that the man I had placed so much hope in was continuing and even escalating these immoral drone strikes and looking ahead rather than cleaning up the evil legacy left by Bush and the stain he put on America.

Yes, vote for Obama everyone. But please do not give up chiding him for this. Please try to find a Democrat who disavows this type of action --or America must truly be seen as what I am afraid it really is. A bellicose nation which only pays lip service to higher morals.

That was before the recent events in the middle east.

And what is the crack about my heart being encased in plaster? Silly.

And no, I don't have the overwhelmingly negative opinion of the President you do. There are exigencies I take into account. That doesn't mean I approve of what he's doing in regard to drone strikes or Afghanistan; I heartily do not.

As for finding a democrat who disavows this kind of action, I'll worry about that in 4 years.
