Protester pushed to ground by police is longtime peace activist from Amherst

Buffalo police Thursday night in front of City Hall, in a video seen by more than 58 million people, is a longtime peace activist from Amherst.

Martin Gugino, 75, was in serious but stable condition at Erie County Medical Center as of Thursday night, according to police.

"He’s a gentle person who really believes that he must stand up for what he thinks is right," said his friend Terrence Bisson, who has worked with Gugino on Latin American issues through the Western New York Peace Center.

"That’s why he went to the demonstration. He would never resist physically any kind of orders," Bisson said. "He’s a bit frail, not because of his age. He has some health problems.

1. OK... I admit that I went to the RWNJ site... the one with the initials FR...

And the comments are interesting.
LOTS of "Good, kill that commie" variety, but there are a few pointing out that the guy was doing nothing. One poster said the old guy reached for the cop's belt, which is why the cop pushed him, and several pointed out that the old guy had a phone in that hand.
Maybe even those assholes on FR are beginning to have doubts.

2. Or They're Waiting For Their Marching Orders & Spin

There always seems to be the period where these Cult members see the light, but before too long, they're right back to drinking the Flavor Aid.

5. The cop was already past him when he decided to push him.

I hope he's charged with assault.

That man did nothing at all to deserve that. I hope he'll be all right. Very worrying.

11. Ah, I remember the Alex Jones conspironutters raging about Jade Helm 15...

...about how the gubbermint wuz cumin' t' take ur gunz, about how 'Obummer' was gunna take over 'Murika fer Kenyer.

Now the stormtroopers are marching in the streets in the name of Tiny Toadstool, and the freepers who aren't openly ecstatic are "quietly concerned, mumble mumble moop moop."

15. They can't handle the truth over there

so they make up stuff to help them believe he deserved it

They've always boasted about resisting tyranny with their assault rifles. Here's tyranny from the government, and they're solidly on the side of the armed government officers against unarmed citizens.

3. I hope that he fully recovers.

I was shocked when first I saw the video of him hitting the concrete and blood almost immediately streaming from his ear. Massive concussion I feared. I thought that he was dead at that point. Glad he is not.

4. He reminded me of Pete Seeger. Probably wasn't smart to reach toward policeman,

but still the push was uncalled for.

7. The push was definitely uncalled for, but when it was obvious the he was seriously injured, and one

officer was pushed away from trying to help the victim, it changed from being perhaps an unintentional push to hurt someone, to an intentional act to hurt someone

8. Those about 4 rows back went quickly to the man. We need to stop hiring x-military

people who are trained to keep moving when someone goes down if on frontline, let the “medics” take care of it BS.

If they had been fighting to the death, I can understand that. But clearly not situation and the senior officer who made the first officer move on after stopping, is part of the problem. It did look like he might have radioed for something, but it was urgent to keep marching. I hope they investigate further.

10. I was not impressed with the Mayor. When asked why they initially said he fell, the Mayor said it

was an error. I would characterize it as a lie

If there wasn't a camera there, I suspect they would continue saying he lied

Excellent analysis by you of the chain of command, and where the medics come into play

Thanks

12. i don't think it has much to do with the military.

It's the ones making the rules who are the problem. Not long after the Cielo Vista mawsacre a man I hadn't met before asked me if I thought the police should have killed the perp. I said no because we have a system for that. He gave me a big hug. He was retired Special Forces.

6. Aha! An "Outside Agitator"!

(I know the Buffalo area fairly well - Amherst is a relatively affluent town that abuts Buffalo on the northeast.)

Seriously, though, I hope Mr. Gugino recovers quickly, and that this incident leads to real and lasting reform nationwide.

14. I hope he recovers quickly, and that he gets a multimillion dollar settlement from Buffalo.

Time heals all wounds - well... most wounds - .... and $Millions makes the process smoother.

16. Gut punch

I am fairly sure that Martin Gugino went to my high school—one year behind me.
