A friendly reminder of his car elevator and Swiss Bank accounts is all that's really needed now.

(3,784 posts)I bet Obama will make reference to it in some way, just to keep the public aware of it.
And it hasn't gone away 100%, because I saw it mentioned in one of the more recent Obama ads (but it was used as a funny dig in order to springboard to another issue). I live in Ohio, so trust me, I get to see ALL the ads that run on TV.
Unlike a few other campaigns from the past, I actually trust the Obama campaign to know exactly the right way to play this one. An issue can turn against you if you flog it too long. And if there's one thing I've learned this year, it's that Mitt is so stupid that HE'LL probably be the one who brings it up and keeps it alive. He's just not very smart.

(5,763 posts)Why do you think he's been so passive? He's afraid if he opens his mouth and he doesn't make a gaffe that leads the news, then he'll be asked about his tax returns again.
The tax return issue is working for Obama, even if not openly. There's a danger of overusing it. If the Democrats demand his tax returns and he refuses, and then nothing else happens, that's news only for about a week.
I wouldn't worry. There's an indictment in the for Romney.

(36,827 posts)However, even it if isn't in the media much, it still sandbags Rmoney because it pretty much denies him any claim he might make for his own personal integrity for fear of it raising it's head again. It also limits who he can be interviewed by which limits his exposure, and you can bet it will be brought up dring the debates where he'll have to suffer through it again.

(6,785 posts)they've stopped talking about it. Like someone has told them "We've got his tax returns. We'll be releasing them around mid-October."
Either way, IMO it's best to not lay on the horn all the way up to the election. Better to honk it for a while, then start honking again right before the actual election.

Many of us may have thought it, wondered it, etc, but a recent post by another DU'er really brought it into focus for me. And, a guy who would stiff the government, and his fellow citizens, surely wouldn't be bothered a bit to stiff his church too. Just a thought. Sharing for any new DU'ers who might stumble in, and to bump this thread.

(13,485 posts)Don't underestimate what goes on in the back room. Let's say old Mitt is caught red handed with fraud up the kazoo. He's not only going to lose the election but he's goin' ta jail. The GOP is screwed royal for ever and a day. They pay off the million to the hacker and tell'm disappear or die. The dark side of the GOP makes deal with the dark side of the administration, "You drop the tax fraud demands and we drop...(unknown deep dark plan)". A deal is struck, the demands are secretly dismissed only leaving the public asking a lot of questions that almost always are magically ignored. The media is held in limbo and wait for a blip that never comes. All that's left is dead air and a little static.
I just made all this up just to reiterate, don't underestimate what goes on in the back room. We may never know.

(16,064 posts)it's a non-issue. those who would vote for romney would applaud him if he has been able to avoid paying taxes. The people outraged are those who would not vote for him under any circumstances.
