sometimes they surprise you. Because they have lifetime appointments they aren't beholden to anybody and will occasionally issue opinions that the president who appointed them would disagree with. I still maintain that Alito and Thomas, not Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, are the worst of this bunch.

Thomas in particular would still be the worst if you took 200 people at random off the street and sat them on the court... or maybe out of prison...

Thomas just goes along with him now that Scalia is worm food. Alito actually knows what he's doing which is far more frightening than lazy Clarence. Neither will surprise anyone.

the right wing justices appointed are so extreme. In the past that was very true. Perhaps the best example is that Earl Warren, a Republican who was Dewey's running mate in 1948 and was appointed by Ike turned out to be perhaps the most liberal chief justice to ever have served..

I hope President Biden gets a chance to replace both Alito and Thomas.

If he’s elected, I think Justice Ginsberg will retire in February 2021.

To me it seems as plain as the nose on your face that discrimination against LGBT people is the same as discrimination against any other group. I don't think it should take a majority of 9 old Ivy League educated lawyers to figure that out.

and it was assumed that he'd be just a Trump puppet who would figure out a way to legally discriminate against anybody Trump and his wingnut base disapprove of. Of course discrimination against LGBT people is just like discrimination against anybody else, but the RW, especially the fundies, still think it's a lifestyle choice and not a person's natural characteristic like race.

Maybe it’s because there has been so little joy lately. Or maybe it’s because it’s a 6-3 decision and that gives me hope that our Supreme Court hasn’t been completely destroyed.

Read the opinion, or at least the summary at the beginning. There is SO much there to make you smile, and cry.

This decision is right up there with the legalization of gay marriage. I say this as a straight white woman, with nothing personal at stake. This is major. Especially right now.

We all have to work to live. No one should be denied that right based on sexual preference.

Absolutely the right ruling. It should have been 9-0.

Sometimes small gestures can have unexpected consequences. Major initiatives practically guarantee them. In our time, few pieces of federal legislation rank in significance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There, in Title VII, Congress outlawed discrimination in the workplace on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Today, we must decide whether an employer can fire someone simply for being homosexual or transgender. The answer is clear. An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids.

Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result. Likely, they weren’t thinking about many of the Act’s consequences that have become apparent over the years, including its prohibition against discrimination on the basis of motherhood or its ban on the sexual harassment of male employees. But the limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands. When the express terms of a statute give us one answer and extratextual considerations suggest another, it’s no contest. Only the written word is the law, and all persons are entitled to its benefit.

simple for the Supremes - it’s sex discrimination to deny a right to a man if you would not deny that right to a woman under the same circumstances. And vice versa.

She was on MSNBC this morning with Ari Melber. Also, the advocacy groups were pleasantly surprised and were not expecting to win.

Pete Williams was actually smiling when he reported the decision.
