he debt ceiling deal has left the Tea Party more disliked than ever, as a recent New York Times poll shows. In April, 2010, 21 percent of Americans approved of the Tea Party while 18 percent disapproved of it. Now, 20 percent approve while a stunning 40 percent disapprove of it.

1. They are a phoney political gimmick that was used to rebrand the Republican Party...

they still contend they are a major party and Republicans are dead. Their aim is to kill off the brand Republican. They are rather close to doing so. Just imagine the extremely low approval ratings for Congress yet Republicans think they can still hold onto the house. makes no sense to me.

They almost had me convinced at first: That they were some valid non-partisan libertarian movement focused on taxes and limited government ( though I disagreed with their worldview from the get-go )

It took hardly any time at all for religious fundamentalists and and xenophobic flag wavers to take it over and next thing you know it was nothing more than the hard-right wing of the GOP. They may by their own thinking still be a movement in and of itself, and they demand absolute fealty by republicans, they know damned well their 15 minutes of fame would be likely just that if they didn't latch on to the republican party.

"We hit the button and we started doing the Twittering and Facebook and the phonecalls and the emails, and you turned up!" Then a series of AFP organisers tell Mr Koch how they have set up dozens of Tea Party events in their home states. He nods and beams from the podium like a chief executive receiving rosy reports from his regional sales directors. Afterwards, the delegates crowd into AFP workshops, where they are told how to run further Tea Party events.

Americans for Prosperity is one of several groups set up by the Kochs to promote their politics. We know their foundations have given it at least $5m, but few such records are in the public domain and the total could be much higher. It has toured the country organising rallies against healthcare reform and the Democrats' attempts to tackle climate change. It provided the key organising tools that set the Tea Party running.

The movement began when CNBC's Rick Santelli called from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for a bankers' revolt against the undeserving poor. (He proposed that the traders should hold a tea party to dump derivative securities in Lake Michigan to prevent Obama's plan to "subsidise the losers": by which he meant people whose mortgages had fallen into arrears.) On the same day, Americans for Prosperity set up a Tea Party Facebook page and started organising Tea Party events.

I agree with you post, but I still can’t believe we have an overwhelming majority in America who are conservative and we can’t even select a conservative (which today does not matter since we have our nominee). So we have our candidate and he POSSIBLY can’t beat a Marxist....unreal.

Hey, TEA PARTY fanatics, google "Koch Brothers" if ya wanna see who's really behind your so-called "grass roots" movement.....it's really an "astro turf" job.....do you REALLY think rich corporations and rich people in general actually care about you, do you think they want to hang out with you? You guys are being used, but you're too dopey to even realize it.....the rich are laughing at you; while you champion their lower taxes/no taxes, they're laughing all the way to the bank....When was the last time YOU were able to have a good laugh????
