Why I believe that Trump's rally tonight will be remembered as the moment he lost the election

Trump is going to be crucified for his Tulsa rally. First, packing 20,000 Trump supporters into an indoor stadium, not insisting on mask wearing or social distancing -- in the next few weeks, there will be a huge spike in cases in Oklahoma and beyond that will be directly blamed on Trump. It is spiking anyway, but this super-spreader event will put Trump’s mishandling of coronavirus back on top of the news. This can only be bad for Trump who wants to pretend the problem has gone away.

What is Trump going to talk about? He can’t even boast about the economy anymore. He has nothing positive to say. All he can really do is downplay coronavirus and double down on all his grievances. It will be the most nasty, wild and undisciplined rant ever, even by Trump’s own low standards. It will be authoritarian and racially insensitive, when most of the nation is behind the Black Lives Matter movement.

He will look tone deaf. These are not issues that will just go away when we move onto another subject. The Coronavirus disaster and the movement for racial justice is here to stay until well beyond the election. Trump will only magnify that he is out of touch on both issues. I believe that tonight will be a PR disaster that will be remembered as the point in which Trump lost the election.

He just lies and lies, so it will be more of that and his cruel “people have not died in vain because the economy is coming back, baby!” nonsense, which he had the gall to tweet at us yesterday.

He’s a psychopath and they love him for it.

The speech will be full of outrageously racist and xenophobic sound bites. That won't play well among the people Trump must persuade to vote for him if he's going to win.

Talking to his base isn't enough.

Unless Trump makes an unusually extreme gaffe - like falling off the stage or something - most people won't pay any attention to what he says today.

His team probably views this as a low-risk way to cheer him up. The fuhrer loves to talk to his people.

He has always been more freewheeling and outrageous in front of his adoring fans.

We have been appalled by his behavior over the last 3 months but even that was in more "professional" environments like press conferences.

I expect him to take it up a notch tonight and it could easily be the worst 90 minutes of his Presidency. And yes I realize that is a pretty high bar.

For them it's a free ticket to big show. He'll play his favorite hits and the audience will happily chant along "build the wall" "lock her up" and cheer and boo on cue.
I wish that the national media would just ignore it, but they are playing right into his hands. I don't think this rally will influence any voters.

I don't say that I'm looking forward to this rally being a super spreader event, I'm just anticipating that it will be. And there is a very real possibility that Trump himself could become infected. And I do think that it will ultimately undermine his campaign in the long term. Worse, by the time it is evident that this has happened, he'll have had events in Arizona and elsewhere, and possibly the convention as well. We could well roll into the debates with Trump desperately trying to justify these events to a horrified population.

But I also find myself kinda hoping that it doesn't happen because of all of the innocent people that will be infected/affected because of this stupidity

No small irony that attendees are having to sign a promise not to sue if they catch a virus that many of them believe to be a hoax.

At best, Trump will stay in character as a distraught teenage girl and rehash all of the usual whining about being picked on by all his standard list of villains.

Then he will delight his audience with weak, one sentence boasts where he tries to masquerade his poor leadership in response to the corona virus, mounting unemployment, the failing economy and denial of social and racial justice.

Everything else Trump will do At his show will be reduced to bloated, over the top hyperbole and grandstanding in exchange for cheering applause by an ignorant crowd of mindless cultists who are useful props to fluff up his deflated ego. It's cheap entertainment for one and all.
