Is this is what we can expect in November?

So with all this vote by mail, is this what we should to expect in November? Not knowing results until the next week?

1. Pretty much

Better start resetting our expectations.

Also, better start making people aware of how to apply for mail-in applications in each state, where applicable.

2. Bluntly, yes.

Our election will have a mid 19th century feel to it. We should all brace for weeks, possibly months, not days, when it comes to results.

5. I don't see any way around it.

C-19 will still be a factor in November, and vulnerable populations will seek to avoid going physically to a polling place. We're going to use absentee ballots, but I doubt that Trump will lose SC.

11. Those elected do not start until the next year so waiting a week or so

should not be a problem at all. what matters is making sure everyone who wants to vote can do so and that the votes are counted. That everything is fair and secure.

If that means waiting a little longer to find that then that should be fine.

17. What is wrong with setting a return date for General Elrction ballots?

The candidates and issues are known, why do voters wait. I would set October 20 as the last possible return date for ballots and insure that is widely stated on radio and newscasts. Any ballots arriving after close of business on October 20 would be thrown in the trash, with representatives of all parties witnessing them being discarded.

I grates me to no end when I hear people bragging about how they dropped their ballot into the mail or a collection box on Election Day, that is fucking irresponsible, IMO. Ballots like that should be thrown away.

19. It creates uncertainty.

I can see such a system for primaries, where candidates drop out late. For a General Election, there is absolutely NO reason for people not to have returned ballots by mid October. Ballots should be scanned as soon as they are received.

13. My guess is states will make changes to count faster.

One method would be to set a date that ballots must be received by the elections office. Each ballot would be scanned and counted as it arrives. Ohio and Georgia went heavily to mail-in ballots and they were able to report results on election night. We need to stop with the idea that people can sit on general election ballots until the last minute, exactly what does that accomplish other than screw up the counting? The candidates and issues to be voted for are not going to change unless someone dies, get the fucking ballot filled out as soon as it is received and return it.

For general elections, mail-in ballots need to be sent out no later than mid-September and must be back in the elections office by October 20. That is my proposal. With such a system, ballots can be scanned and results from them reported on election night.

14. If exit polls and early results are solid enough, we could still get a winner on Election Day.

Of course, Trump will probably still fight it tooth and nail to the bitter end, as I predicted yesterday:

15. As a resident of a VBM state, I'll say it doesn't have to...

It can be done if done right. But in states new to the process, I suppose this might be what will happen.

20. Yes

But it isn't bad.

But there will always be complainers.

We switched to paper ballots here in Bexar County, Texas. (You know the old, "Electronic machines are hacked"..) We had a huge primary turnout and one of the tabulator machines crashed. This delayed results and resulted in protests.

We also opened more polling sites and allowed voting at any site, not just the local precinct. Unfortunately, this actually led to much longer lines on election day. Instead of voting in their precinct, everyone just went to the popular early voting sites. The libraries (where everyone early votes were jammed)

I kept telling people in line: You can vote at, this middle school, this high school, the elementary school etc..all other sites were within 2 miles and everyone could vote at any middle school, any elementary school or any high school.

Afterward, a few candidates who lost their primaries, put on a shit show, "Voters were disenfranchised" demonstration. The candidate who put on the show is indicted for all sorts of abuse of power as a constable. She is running for sheriff, and she wants criminals like her to "be free" and she reached out to a group of convicted felons to protest...the felons of course were shouting, "felons have rights..don't disenfranchise us". (You can't make this shit up: A constable is in deep shit in all sorts of abuse of power, illegal arrests, kicking people out of parks so her family can have a party, arresting people not in her jurisdiction, using county money to party etc etc etc...decides to run for sheriff and becomes the voice of disenfranchised people...Only in San Antonio)

Democracy can be messy, but we need patience.
