White woman shouts racial slurs and threatens to call police as family moves into new home

A white woman was caught on video using racial slurs to attack a family as they were moving into their new home. A video of the incident, which was said to have occurred in Michigan, was shared on Twitter over the weekend.

In the video, the white woman accuses her new neighbors of breaking the law by moving into their home after dark. “You’ve been screaming since what time?” the woman complains. “You just moved in.”

<...>

“You all are n****rs makings a scene!” the white woman exclaims.

<...>

“N****rs waking me up at 3:30!” the white woman says. “I’ve got a phone too. I’m using it to call the cops.”

The woman was identified on social media as Jessica Evans.

And she was the one making the noise.

And the racial slur is the issue. If she'd come out and said, "Welcome, new neighbors! I'm still trying to sleep - do you mind keeping the noise down a little?" things might have gone differently. But there are no laws about when people can move in, and she claimed it's illegal and threatened to call the cops, and she used a racial slur over and over again.

I understand being uncomfortable and all, but we don't need to call the police over being uncomfortable.

How bizarre.

In fact, the person states they had moved in four days prior in a different tweet. They weren't moving in at that hour.

Of course, had you not quickly decided to side with the woman throwing around the n-word, and stepped back and asked if they were moving in at that hour, maybe you wouldn't have come across believing the words of someone who is clearly not right in the head.

I used to work a graveyard shift so I was up and wide awake at those hours. But when I moved last year I only took small boxes I could carry, and saved moving the furniture and other heavy things for later in the day.

I was also moving to a single family home. I admit moving at graveyard hours in an apartment or condo complex at those hours is pretty inconsiderate though. That doesn’t appear to be the case here judging by the neighborhood.

Plus, I’m in Las Vegas. If you’re going to move house during the summer, 2AM is the time to do it.

There could be a lot of reasons. People get uncomfortable, and yes it's disappointing to get woken up, but that's no excuse for racial slurs or threatening to call the police. People move in once. It's a one-time thing.

Edit: it sounds like they might be annoying neighbors but that doesn't make using that language acceptable. Go over and talk to them during the day or something.

So, I was moving about fifty smaller boxes from one apartment 15 miles away from the new house in a small car by myself between 8pm and 4am on a Thursday.night. Took Friday off to clean and dropped the keys off at the property manager that afternoon, dog tired and barely coherent.
I tried to be as quiet as possible, but still, I probably annoyed most of my former neighbors.

But at least back then, people weren't so emotionally threatened being seen practicing political correctness and we're willing to put up with being inconvenienced by a neighbor who was moving. After all, they knew they could be doing the same a few months later, and treated me with the same respect they would have wanted.

It seems like only yesterday - because it was - that people here attacked a black man for harrasment and even said he should have been arrested because he simply FOLLOWED a white woman home after she flipped him off and called him "nigg-r."

Apparently, for some people on DU, being awakened by someone moving in the middle of the night is justification for being harangued and called racial slurs but someone being harangued and called racial slurs should just shut up and go home and if they don't, that's justification for someone to cower, fall out in their driveway and claim they're being assaulted.

88. This discussion reminds me of debates about Lea Michele's behavior...
Sun Jun 28, 2020, 06:46 PM
Jun 2020

For those unfamiliar with her, she is an actress (most known for the TV show "Glee" ). It is well known in Hollywood (and she does not dispute this part) that she is a horrible person, who belittles, hazes, and generally mistreats her coworkers in very brutal ways. Several Black former co-workers called out behaviors that were aimed at them. One actress "defended" Lea Michele by saying that she's not racist, just horrible to everyone. I think the truth of the matter is that even though she was generally a miserable human being, she likely took out her ire most severely on those who were the most powerless. It's just one manifestation of internalized racism and white supremacy.

In this case, you have a White woman attacking White neighbors using racial slurs. Why? She was upset and inconvenienced in some way and her first instinct was to blame Black people, even though no one involved (as far as we know) was Black. Whatever anger lives inside of her becomes directed toward those most oppressed by society, even where they are utterly blameless. Indeed, the racial hierarchy was created so that Black people would bear the brunt of all social ills. If the world is such that someone must suffer, let's make sure it is people who are not like us. This woman's suffering upended the norms of racial contract. She's not supposed to be suffering, after all. Suffering is for "them." This is why, for me, the Karen phenomenon is not just about the overtly racist Karens. It's about privilege and white supremacy in its many forms. It doesn't matter that this woman was inconvenienced, it doesn't even matter what the race of her targets was (though, I'm sure her reaction would have been much worse if they were Black). What matters is the "why" of her behavior. That's where the work we must do as a society lives.
