Why is Romney not backing down from his comments on the tape?

Because he thinks that it reinforces his narrative that big government is corrupting America. He thinks that people (especially conservatives) will think that he is talking about Welfare recipients (Reagan's "welfare queens&quot . But when you talk to conservatives remind them that welfare recipients are about 1.7% of the population and food stamp recipients are about 8%. Romney is actually mostly talking about the working poor and the elderly on SS when he uses the 47% number. Just watch their faces when they realize what Romney said doesn't reinforce their narrative after all, and might even include them.

Now he's trapped himself into never being able to take back anything he says.
