Saw a strange sight today, maybe you can explain it

I drive up into the mountains more frequently than most, I go places that don't attract tourists.

This morning I found myself driving slowly up what had once been the main road of a small but apparently prosperous town. It had a General Store and a Bank, both built of brick, a stone two-lane bridge crossed the horribly polluted creek. I think its claim to fame, during a short period after the Civil War, was as a repair facility for the rail road, a main spur of which passes just a mile or two away.

About half of the houses were abandoned and those that weren't yet probably would be soon enough. One of the houses was oddly decorated, not quite like anything I've seen before. I didn't get a photo but its easy enough to describe.

On the front door there was a 2x life-size painting of a stylized Indian; Indian in the sense of a 1950's western movie, full headdress and all. In the back ground of the painting, which is to say the rest of the door, well it was painted in the pattern of the familiar Confederate Flag, the one you see all the time whatever its called. There were a bunch of shells and feathers and stuff tied to strings all over the porch too.

And so that was that. I suppose the guy fancies himself some sort of American Indian, and who knows, maybe he is. But what on earth is with the flag. Somehow I don't see the local KKK or Arian Brotherhood as big fans of our original landlords. Could be just one more case of an incredibly mixed up person I suppose. Can you make anything of it?
