the GOP was written off in 1932, 1936 and after the debacle of 1964. Similarly Dems were written off in the 1920's, 1972 & 1980. It's a nice thought but they will still be around in the future but there will be a lot of soul searching if they lose this election like the Dems had after '72 and '80 which (unfortunately) led to things like the DLC. With the dems it led to moving to the right. With the GOP it may lead to them moving back towards the center or having total control given to the tea partiers.

I hear what you're saying but I think we're in uncharted territory this election. Republicans will still be around but their party as we know it is showing signs of collapsing.

I am no expert in history or politics but that's how it seems to me.

They'll have a helluva struggle, but it's still an open question as to where they'll come out. Their only real chance is to kick out the extremists, tweak the conservative ideology, and move to the center. Any other way, the demographics kill them.

I believe that the hearings and resulting bad press kept the repugs in the minority for 40 years.

At least that is what independent projections are showing. If a party controls one/half of Congress they are hardly dead.

The marriage of convenience between the mossback bigots, the religulously insane and the plutocracy is headed for the rocks. The plutocrats have the money, the crazies have the numbers. In the last ten years the inmates have taken over the asylum. Demography will kill the Repigs. Within one or two more presidential election cycles it will not be possible for the Repigs to assemble a majority in the electoral college. They are teetering on the precipice of a bottomless pit.
