New ABC Poll -- The COVID-19 Recession Is All On Trump

From Kevin Drum in Mother Jones

...one thing I never took into consideration—because it seemed ridiculous—was the notion that we would just give up on COVID-19 and therefore cause precisely the kind of uncertainty you get with a normal recession. I mean, that’s just crazy, right? No one would do that.

But in the era of Trump, that’s exactly what we did. So not only do we have a deep recession, but nobody knows when it will end. And even if it looks like it’s about to end, nobody can be sure that it’s really ending. If anything, Trump has created an economic doom loop with even more uncertainty than any recession we’ve ever had. And I guess the public is finally catching on to that

Tremendous catching on. In 2 weeks the trump disapproval gap went from - 17% to -31%. Almost double in 2 weeks?

[Meanwhile, back at the WH, traitortrump keeps vomiting out the same old 'pro-trump' crap].

Before, whenever Trump was getting in trouble and his number started to drop, he could say something crazy and get attention off of that thing and onto something else. It was like have some shiny object to distract a baby with.

However, a couple of things happened here. First, his approval wasn't hurt to start with. There was a rally around the flag effect and Trump made the mistake of trying to latch onto it and make himself the face of the coronavirus response. Remember, he was giving those marathon pressers each day. However, as he gave those people began to see that he has way out of his depth and it started dropping. Trump became obsessed with the stock market and reopening, and when he did cases started to skyrocket to where we are now, and he got full credit for it after making himself the face of it all.

Furthermore, there's nothing he can do to get the news cycle to move off of it. He's trying with all he can by saying racist crazy stuff, saying he's going to defund schools, etc. For the first time he is in a severely negative news cycle that he can't get to change and that isn't going to go away anytime soon. The more he digs, the deeper he gets.

The more personal this pandemic gets, the more they will see his and other GOP leaders' incompetence unveiled.

For something like his tax cuts, he can BS all day long. Proof that he is wrong is not a single document or event. It takes months or years to analyze the data, and the complexity of the economy allows for twisting the numbers or sowing general doubt about anything.

He can lie about Russia and get away with it, even though the lies are obvious. He can bully others to back up his lie, e.g. impeachment.

He has tried to lie about the virus, but the undeniable facts on the ground show hospitals reaching capacity. I just came from a hospital, my wife should have been admitted, but they just replaced fluids, prescribed drugs and released her. Don't give me your crap about "slow the testing down" because of the "numbers looking bad" right now, I am not in the mood. To be clear, my wife does not have covid-19, she was there for other health problems but these types of admission decisions are becoming common place here in San Antonio.

But it's always in a transient situation that comes and goes. The pandemic isn't going anywhere, and Trump's continued bluster and bafflegab are no match for plain, ongoing, relentless reality. He's commanding the sun to stop in the sky, and everyone can see it's not happening.

7. IIRC from stats class... What could be happening is that the same sample is repeatedly polled.
Fri Jul 10, 2020, 02:26 PM
Jul 2020

If a sample changes, one can't tell if the increase/decrease is due to sample composition difference, so that's likely the reason.

It's not outside the realm of possibility that the first ABC sample is this one, and that the hardcore 30% just do not have access to, or don't open up to, new information from sources.

If 21% of Americans are functionally illiterate, just add non-readers or people without access to media to make that figure believable. Doesn't mean the sample reflects them, or that they can't think clearly about what they hear, either. The sample could have always been a combination of unexposed people mixed with people who approve, though they have the same info as the rest of us.

8. tRUMP's forced daily 'War President' briefing while he muzzled the experts...
Fri Jul 10, 2020, 02:36 PM
Jul 2020

Was the straw that broke the camel's back and shattered the fake reality myth that he was a genius. With people at home watching the 'stable genius' flail, utter gibberish, and actually show how much of a selfish, self centered, tyrant he really was, was the shock that woke America up. Especially when the imbecile told everyone to drink bleach, inject Lysol into themselves, and shove a light sabre up their ass to get sunlight in the body, as though he was so far ahead of the actual experts he refused to let speak. And it didn't help when America learned Jared viewed all PPE and supplies as the tRUMP family commodity to sell on the open market to desperate States trying to get supplies, because the selfish bastards refused to actually mobilize the country (and still won't) to quickly resolve all supply shortages... Highest bidder for Jarvanka and the tRUMP spawn's profit margins, with Dumbass Donald getting his cut off each sale.

Jesus Christ, this country is going to need a whole army of investigators and prosecutors to examine the fraud the tRUMP stain and their henchmen made on the country with just COVID19 alone, let alone all the other fraud they used the U.S. Government for in their corruption and schemes.

9. All first paragraph, YES.

Re your second paragraph, a couple of inspector generals can collect data from states who provide documentation of supplies that got confiscated -- most confiscations, as I understand it, being declared legal under 45's emergency powers -- along with lists of companies' boards/CEO's that sold supplies abroad during the early pandemic period, and if those donated to buy GOP silence. All of these activities are important matters for new lawmaking. None of it should ever happen again.

The truth will come out. At least it will only be 6 months' worth and not years' worth of information.

It's only because Reeps have tried for decades to reap credit from Dems' constant ideas and cleanup, that they get "another chance" at the ballot.

That's among the many things we have to remind people about in 2024.
