When I asked her if she had seen Mitt Romney's hidden video:
She looked mad as hell and said, "What the hell is wrong with him?!!"
She told me she will not vote for him now.

(272 posts)They snapped at me, and said "Mitt's telling the truth! Good!!!"...
I calmly replied - Really? That many people, 47% are "victims" that don't want to work???
Their rebuttle was "Well, maybe the numbers are off, but Romney's right!! Obama is a food-stamp president"......
These people are really starting to annoy me. and I try to seriously be REASONABLE with them. Becoming more and more difficult!!!

(17,638 posts)income tax, only capital gains if that; and how their take over of a company's pension fund was probably put in an off-shore bank, the people who paid into it will only get 30 to 40% on the dollar, paid for by the gov. and Rmoney and his gang get all the rest.

(3,056 posts)That meme was old when that malevolent dwarf Newt said it. I guess we're supposed to believe that Obama convinced people with good jobs to quit them so they could go on the public dole. The fact that more people are on food stamps now has absolutely nothing to do with the economic collapse and jobs being sent to China and elsewhere where people work for 25 cents a hour. I guess we were just supposed to let these people starve to death.
Move along, folks. Nothing to see here. And ignore the man behind the curtain.

(11,304 posts)because many people do not want to get them. Majority of white people are getting food stamp and now have a better understanding about food stamps and why people are getting them. I thank god I don't have to be on food stamps but never say never. I don't begrude people who are on them.

(1,846 posts)January 2009 I think, an old right-winger came through my line and started going on about Obama and socialism and blah blah blah. I just nodded, corrected him on a couple of points and tried to speed him to the end of the transaction. Then he opens his wallet and pulls out an EBT (food stamp) card. We both look at it.
*crickets*
He then blusters "Well I guess I'll just pay with my commie card then!"
I do give him credit though, though he clearly was in need of the card, the next few times he came through my line he paid with dollars, loose change, and bottle return slips instead of the card. He at least could see the hypocracy of railing against a program he was partaking in.
The really sad thing is he didn't seem to realise that he really was entitled to it, he had contributed into the system his entire working life.

(7,865 posts)But individuals making ridiculous gobs of money and demanding ever more are different from the corporate publically traded model. The corporation does not represent people as much as it does an amoral, heartless, mathematical formula that is fixed in it's concern to only maximize quarterly return on rate of investment at any cost.
That said there clearly are many, many members of the 1% that have an illness regarding money.

(53,661 posts)And her husband has been on VA disability for many years and not paid taxes. She felt insulted. I also told her about some changes to SS that had been made since 2009 and how nice they were the last time I went up there about someone getting disability. And how my area (very blue) is well organized for the disabled. She was pleased. I think she's considering a move out of the Glenn Beckistan state of mind. Nicest conversation we've had in years.

(53,661 posts)Well, they are true. I don't think he understood the fire he set there.
Those number are made of people who:
Have not yet paid taxes -- the children in your school;
Have or have not been able to pay taxes -- those born disabled or disabled from working;
And the elderly -- who already paid their taxes.
Being able to work and pay taxes is not the standard for being a human and being treated with dignity. People that are in education know that as their lives are not based on money alone.
Teachers may not be paying taxes either -- I've known some who had to get food stamps, go to food banks and get on utility assistance and worked every day. Their tax rate was very low or not at all some years but that didn't mean they were lazy.
They 'followed all the rules and made good choices' as Obama says, and still, they are not independently wealthy. They are caretakers to their families, to other people, they work several jobs and don't party or indulge themselves --- they are not slothful or whatever it is Mitt is saying they are.
The Romneys, Ayn Rand cultists and Libertarians go by dollar value only. If you have money now, you get. If you don't have money, and can't get any, die and make way for the Supermen.
That's not the vision that Mayor Castro showed us at the DNC, of working people passing the baton forward to the next generation.
Many are brave enough to admit in the face of relentless RW sitgmatizing, that they had to get public help at some time in their lives. And now they can pay taxes. My Depression era family said paying taxes is a sign of pride, because it means you have a job that can pay taxes.
Romney doesn't know how to work, never did without, his whole life has been a vacation. That's why he doesn't respect those who are tired and need one. I'd say he needs to go home, but he is afraid to because he has to justify himself.
I'm feeling sorry for the man as I don't think he ever really grew up. If he lost all of his money and connections, I think he'd kill himself. He couldn't imagine the lives many of us have. We have had the courage to hold together. We'll be alright.

(14,350 posts)Heck, in Michigan, we pay an extra tax of 3% of our paycheck to pay for the current teacher retirees (supposedly will be there when we retire, but no one's dumb enough to believe that). I lose a ton in taxes every year, even though if I didn't get child/spousal support we'd qualify for food stamps.
freshwest
(53,661 posts)Just did not make enough to pay income taxes the way Romney says. They worked several jobs, just as a number of state workers I know now have to work.
They pay their health insurance, retirement fund, taxes for SS and other things, but didn't end up owing at the end of the year or got EIC. Because they are taking care of other people.
One in particular did not get spousal support after their divorce and was lucky to hold onto the equity in their house and finance the rest to keep her home. She had to get food stamps and utility assistance. Her girl has Down's and she had to get her on Medicaid when she retired and her girl was no longer covered.
Most of the teachers I've known are real life savers and they do not deserve the hatred that is being flung at them from the GOP.

Thinking about it though, they actually wouldn't probably allow Romney in that discussion. His wealthy but not quite in their league. He's do their dirty-work anyway without being in on the big picture.

I believe he was talking about what I have heard is fox's non-stop montage (undated and unsourced) of smashed windows, burning vehicles, shouting brown people, and angry commentary about who's hating on who (because of Obama)...
At least in discussion we were able to resolve it down to fundamental differences in viewpoint - I think people are basically good, basically honest, hardworking like us, going to work every day, sitting at home with their families, talking about things, etc.
Where he thinks most people aren't much better than animals, who would lie, cheat, steal, stab you in the back, whatever.

Whenever I see him, we speak neighborly -like and usually end up in a political conversation. His objection to President Obama ... "He's a socialist", "He's killing industry with his regulations", "Obamacare is evil" ... you know, the typical teaparty narrative.
Well, I haven't seen him in awhile; but I still see his truck ... I noticed the other day, both bumperstickers were gone!

Yeah ... the devil in me has great fun with him ... but I don't think he gets my digs.
