There isn’t some missing nuance here. Either gatherings are ok or they aren’t.

You can travel around the town where I live and see that all day long. We have a mandatory mask ordinance but it's not enforced.

Sorry to break the news, but our nation is loaded with selfish people who don't give a damn about anyone other than themselves. It's not everyone but a sizable number.

No collective action works; the concept of shared sacrifice or altruism has been ground out of the populace, despite its supposed fealty to the lessons of Jesus of Nazareth.

The thing that will make the readjustment back to the historical -- and I mean 150,000 year of history -- norm is going to the economic bind we're starting to glimpse right now. The way this disease is spreading and affecting economics, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if we're in a major depression this time next year.

This is where history is writ large and it usually isn't pretty.

were wearing masks here in NYC. (Cops working them often weren't, though.)

Most of the marches groups tried to walk with space between them wearing masks.

This is a party where people are drinking and speaking into each other's faces. More alcohol = more lax, closer together. hookups. It's not the same as protests at all. And to say it is is disingenuous.

I was also nervous that protests would produce a spike in cases. In NYC, it didn't. Outdoor masked activity. Grateful for that.

Now I"m concerned about 4th of July parties. Those numbers should be starting to appear about now.

You guys are better than this. Smarter than this, too. You have no regrets?? You will when your friends start getting sick or you lose your favorite auntie to Covid.

We all need to be better than this or the virus will never be controlled.

Btw, Southwest Philly is where my husband grew up.

I love Philly. Miss it, too. But this action was dumb and could lead to a lot of unnecessary illness.

We all need to be better to get to the end of this damn virus.

That was my Philly pep talk.

it was sad that populous areas like NYC didn't lock down soon enough, but now many dying in Georgia, Arizona, Texas and Florida--states with asshole GOP governors who tried to reopen way too soon.

Trumpists hesded up Jacobs Ladder. what the meth and Opioid crisis didn't wipe out will soon be taken care of by "covid is a hoax"and "masks are a tool of the deep state" red hats dying on ventilators to own the libs.

If they're stupid enough to be packed into a party like sardines during a pandemic, I'm a little worried... Pennsylvania is a must-win state.
