When word got out that there was an FBI informant in the car, Hoover put out false rumors that Viola was a drug addict who only came to Selma to have sex with black men.

(3,469 posts)I recommend the book "From Selma To Sorrow" or the documentary "Home of the Brave," to anyone who would like to learn more. Viola was an amazing woman, very ahead of her times. What Hoover did to her and her family is unconscionable .

I remember well the shock when her death was reported
And the ongoing attempt to depict her as a 'bad' woman for whom no one should feel any sorrow or sympathy
And such stories live forever around the history of events. There's still sort of an uneasy feeling associated with her. You have to study her more closely than most do to get the true story about her
"There's sort of an uneasy feeling associated with her." When I first heard her story, I tried to learn more about her. In the few articles I could find at that time, I was struck by that uneasiness. Even Obama once mentioned her in a speech as "a housewife from Detroit" without using her name. It has always felt like her very name was tainted and that was all Hoover's doing. Mud always sticks to women.

(12,858 posts)* IIRC he bugged MLK's rooms, tried to get dirt on him. Communist connections, adultry, etc
* FBI had agents, informants in groups working against Civil Rights workers. They often allowed beatings, burnings, etc, to occur in order to protect their cover. I believe there's a suspicion that at least some of info was not acted on because Hoover didn't care
Doesn't Mississippi Burning claim FBI was working on side of Civil Rights workers and the blacks? I remember many blacks were quite angry at the prominent role the movie gave whites, seeming to imply that whites led the activites and were responsible for gains made
