Ann Romney defended her husband's closed-door comment that 47 percent of Americans are incurably dependent on governemnt and see themselves as "victims" in an interview with Colorado station FOX31.
"It's unfortunate when something gets misinterpreted like this or it gets taken out of context because if you really do listen to everything he does say, he's talking about what we're facing in America today," Romney said in the interview.
According to Buzzfeed, the Romney campaign uploaded video of the interview to YouTube with the title "Ann Romney to FOX31: Mitt Doesn't Disdain the Poor" before quickly removing it.

(6,286 posts)Now granted, it was hard to hear sometimes between the chortling and clinking of silver and wine glasses, but I heard the context. Mitt said what he meant and you should go groom your horse of something and shut the hell up. Your negative ratings have got to be as shitty as his are, and you should be keeping a low profile at this point.

(42,753 posts)There's no misunderstanding here. Mittens went on at length sharing his thoughts on what he
thinks of the "non-privileged" segment of our society. And this was not the first time either.

And An attitude of entitlement. (Yes, he talks about "entitlements" as a political term, but is there anyone who embodies a sense of entitlement more than the Romneys?)

(6,829 posts)Whenever you encounter someone who claims X thing or idea was "taken out of context," challenge them to place said thing or idea in context. Maybe they actually can, and you'll see things from a perspective you had never considered. Most likely, though, you will presented with The Silence, as they realize there is no context to explain said behavior

(45,319 posts)benfits from the taxpayers for years when they returned from Mexico after abandoning the US to practice polygamy. Is that the context Ann means? George Romeny was a welfare baby, Mitt's life was built on a foundation of help from the social safety nets he now sneers at.
Mitt and Ann are trashy, hypocritical people.

With Mitt, we have all the context we need.

(546 posts)Romney could have made his comments (elegantly, of course) on the floor of that factory in China, with those female worker-victims arrayed behind him (pay 'em a pittance extra for smiling).
He could have made his comments from the beach on Grand Cayman Island.
He could have made those comments while jet-skiing on the lake in New Hampshire.
Face it, Ann: the more context, the worse it looks. The more he says, the worse he sounds.
Perhaps he should make these comments from the podium in a national press conference as some of the reasons for his decision to withdraw his candidacy. In that context, most people might agree with him.

(24,461 posts)THIS is "out of context":
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges; if you've got a business you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don't do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.
That's what your dumbass party "built" their entire convention around . .. a deceptively-edited sound bite and what they want to hear . . . just like EVERYTHING else they selectively aurally edit.
THIS is "1000 fucking percent IN Context . .. in other words, what Mitt REALLY thinks about us":
And I mean the President starts off with 49, 49 he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. 47% of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesnt connect.
So hell be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean, thats what they sell every 4 years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. Ill never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.
What I have to do is convince the 5% to 10% that are independents, that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or another depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not.
See, Ann? This isn't so hard!

OF COURSE Mitt felt confident, surrounded by people who understand him and agree with his union busting, wage suppressing, Cayman Island banking , wars-are-for-me-to-profit-from-and- other-shmucks-to-fight, not them. At the same time they believe themselves to be blessed holy warriors for Christ. IOW, he was talking to over-privileged lunatics with too much power.
And really, I haven't ever seen Mitt sound so relaxed and sure of himself than I did in that "quiet room..

(1,185 posts)... because the only context he was talking to was the 1%. It's only "out of context" because "those people" somehow got their grubby paws on it and there is Limited Spin even for the obedient media when you have video and audio going around the internet.

(14,177 posts)I think it's great when spouses stick up for each other first off. But, I have never seen a spouse stuck explaining their candidate spouse as much as Ann does. She is constantly apologizing, explaining, and defending Mitt. I haven't seen Michelle do this ever. She is supportive, but she also has her own thing she does like pushing for healthier school lunches. She is a great first lady. But, Ann nah they just trot her out when Mitt can't apologize cause that idea doesn't exist in his world.
BTW Ann I didn't stop getting tired of you yet, so you can shut yer yap.
cr8tvlde
(1,185 posts)but it's called hiding behind your mother's skirt. And in Mitt's pathetic case, his mother would be calling his sorry ass out and putting him across her knee. Oh, what a mental image. That video was one strong woman.
And yes, he's got Ann mixed up with his mother, as do many insecure men. Same can be true for women and their fathers, but we just happen to be talking about a male who's really insecure in both his maleness and his lust for power.
Obama does not have that handicap, so he married a Michelle...strong and powerful in her own right.

(14,881 posts)We got the entire context. The video was released in full and proved it.
For once, he was extremely articulate. His meaning was very clear. These were not complex sentences that could be misconstrued. 47% of the country view themselves as victims. 47% of the country is dependent on the government. Nothing to misread there. And a ME policy to "kick the can down the road."
