Over and over I see the left respond to the dependency meme by defending the importance of government programs, but rarely by denying the dependency. I can understand a wingnug believing that 47% of the population lives off the government, but surely we know better.
Mitt Romney just defined all Democratic voters as non-taxpaying, and dependent. The Democrats I know are mostly higher income, and several are business owners.
Yes, 47% of the population are not required to pay income tax, and I'll concede that about 47% of the population support Obama, but they've taken those two numbers and sold America on the idea that they're the SAME people.
Obama has nearly 100% of the Black vote. That includes Black lawyers, doctors, and business owners. He has strong support among Latino poor, as well as Latino judges and engineers. He has growing numbers among former Republicans, regardless of income.
I worked in Social Services for 25 years, and knew many people who received assistance. I think Romney would be surprised to see how many of them are Republicans.
Romney's statements aren't just cruel, they're untrue. This needs to be hammered home.

(14,549 posts)among the best: Mitt's number includes Americans serving in combat and retired Americans who are receiving SS checks because they paid into SoSoc for decades. Romney dares to call these Americans "dependent" and "victims". His job is "to not worry about them."
Mitt hates on everyone. Threw his own wife and his grandfather under the campaign bus on that tape also.

(37,573 posts)is NOT the same thing as receiving assistance.
Other than the assistance of a $100 tax cut.
Many of the poor, and near poor, including my own white-trash, Obama-supporting self, are WORKING people.

(37,573 posts)you didn't say that only people getting assistance pay no income taxes
but by contrasting people who get assistance with people with high incomes, you seemed to be ignoring people with low or moderate income who still pay no Federal income taxes. Like this theoretical example http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=1369305
It was Romney himself who conflaed "people who pay no income taxes" to "people who are dependent on the Government". So I keep trying to push back with the fact that many of those people paying no Federal income taxes are WOKRING for a living, unlike Romney who makes $3.3 million a year just from interest on his massive wealth.
He makes $3.3 million a year for doing absolutely nothing, and he wants to call ME a freeloader?

(3,427 posts)What does he want them to do, send the government money they don't owe just to satisfy millionaires like him? If he doesn't like the fact that 47 percent pay no Federal income taxes, he should propose changing the freaking tax rules to reduce deductions and credits for low-income households. Or maybe that's part of his secret plan.
