It pisses me off to no end that much of the rest of the world has been able to move on...

from the threat of the virus (except in controlling outbreaks), while we are still in the middle of a covid nightmare. Just look at some of these numbers from yesterday as to # of new coronavirus cases (from worldometers):

France (pop. 67m) : +836
Japan (pop. 126m): +583
Germany (pop. 83m): +509
Australia (pop. 26m): +425
South Korea (pop. 52m): +60
Hong Kong (pop. 7.5m): +58
China (pop. 1,400m) : +10
Thailand (pop. 70m): +3
Taiwan (pop. 24m): +2
Vietnam (pop. 96m): +1
New Zealand (pop. 5m) : +1

We are being left behind in the world

3. France launching "large scale" testing campaign to identify dormant infection clusters

France said on Thursday it was launching a "large scale" coronavirus testing campaign in a bid to identify any dormant infection clusters.

Some 1.3 million people in the Ile-de-France region, which includes Paris, will receive vouchers for a virus test, Health Minister Olivier Veran told Le Monde newspaper.

Even those who display no symptoms would be eligible, he said.

People who live near previous hotspots will be targeted in a bid to identify asymptomatic carriers who may be transmitting the virus without knowing it, said the minister.

6. +1. Not many people know that Vietnam is one of five countries that export test kits

Less than a month ago, Vietnam was importing COVID-19 test kits from South Korea and conducting test research with Japan. Today, Vietnam is exporting domestically made kits to richer nations, adding to a string of diplomatic gains for the Southeast Asian country that curbed the infection earlier than most.

Vietnam’s test kits attained a seal of approval from both the World Health Organization and Britain, the government in Hanoi said this week. Officials say Vietnam is one of five nations to have the kits ready for export and has received orders from 20 nations, as many governments struggle to secure enough tests.

They've ruined it for the rest of us. It will be a miracle if we can get this train wreck back on the tracks.

Other nations set national policies—testing, tracing, isolation and treatment procedures. trump did none of that and still won't. Won't even wear a mask.

If he had started wearing a mask in March and mandated everyone else to wear one, we wouldn't have these idiots running around refusing to wear one. It's only because he won't wear one.

The other thing he should've done is deploy the Defense Production Act to manufacture PPE for the whole nation. It's not rocket science to produce PPE. Masks could've been available to everyone months ago and we'd have beaten back the virus too like the European and Asian nations, also Australia and New Zealand.

We're so screwed, we wasted all those weeks of self-isolation and many states may have to do it again as the orange fool pushed dumb ass repug governors to re-open too soon.

I think it goes beyond Trump - the real problem as I see it is with some of the American people.

If Obama was in office, we would no doubt have a much more robust plan in place to deal with the virus but we'd also have the contingent of the populace who would still be doing the very same things that they are doing (or not doing) now. We would still see the 'it's my right not to wear a mask' folks - possibly even more virulent because they'd be asked to do the right thing by the dreaded Obama administration.

Our country is also very much into the 'Don't Tread On Me' idea where selfishness rules the day and division is a national pastime.

Other countries tend to have much less idiocy and people seem far more willing to work together for the common good - we're one of the only countries to have actually gone to war with one another over two very different visions of what America is.

Our rebel culture is not a help during a time when the people and the government need to work together and trust each other.

We're a country of contrarians, many of whom are also political vandals who'd bring it all crashing down just to see the 'splosions.
