Taking it personally: John Lewis

As a child who grew up in segregated schools surrounded by segregated restaurants and "White Only" water fountains; who watched Bloody Sunday and the many other violent reactions to civil rights advances on live television, who lived in Memphis when King was assassinated, and later moved to Georgia to watch the ongoing struggles for civil rights marshaled by our many great icons here, and to be privileged to cast my votes for them, I am taking the loss of John Lewis quite personally. I think all Americans should.

Then, we are not allowed to properly mourn, because any comments made by the president are made by a Republican. This time is worse, because it is Trump. Trump is the most selfish, most hateful, and least empathetic person I have ever seen in our government. That speaks volumes, because I am in North Carolina where some of the worst Republicans ever come from. Even damned ol' Jesse Helms once considered not being a jerk when Bono talked to him. It was only once, but at least there was a one time. With Trump? Never. He hasn't said or done one single good thing.

I really hope he doesn't say anything at all. Sometimes, it is better when nasty people just stay away and don't pile on top of what is already painful and miserable, but that is not what nasty people do. They have to pile on and rub acid in the wounds. One thing I know for a fact Republicans enjoy is rubbing acid in the wounds. They wouldn't dream of just salt. It's gotta be acid so they can get their sick thrill of torturing innocent people. Ever notice that? Republicans get the most joy out of torturing the innocent and wouldn't dream of even punishing the guilty.

With all of the violence through the years, the first thing our government decides is that being anti-fascist is what is now considered terrorism. Meanwhile, all of the hate groups get to be in charge and despite their extreme violence through the years, never get so much as a slap on the wrist. Even Canada. Et tu, Canada? Someone spray painted a pro-Nazi statue in Canada, I know, sounds off, but it's real, and now they are charging it as a "hate crime." It feels like the whole damn world is going pro-fascism, pro-Nazi, and pro-racist.

It is good to be able to come to DU and hear from like-minded people who are not turning that way. I need DU now more than ever, because I live in blood red Trump-land where I might get shot or otherwise attacked for wearing a mask to try to protect from Covid-19, just for going to the grocery store or to the dump. Those are now the only places I go, because it's just too nerve racking to go anywhere. I'm not going without my mask and I'm not sure of my safety for wearing the mask. I can't starve and sit in a pile of garbage up to my neck though.

I cannot emphasize how good it is to hear from others who are against racism and fascism and all of the other forms of bigotry out there. <3

Maybe we could all watch his service on DU together somehow. Anyone know when it will be?
