As I have posted elsewhere here, that date is also the 60th anniversary of "Ax Handle Saturday."

More than 200 white people wielding baseball bats and ax handles chased African Americans through the streets of downtown Jacksonville, trying to beat them into submission.

It was August 27, 1960, a day that became known as “Ax Handle Saturday.”

The violent attack was in response to peaceful lunch counter demonstrations organized by the Jacksonville Youth Council of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

The attack began with white people spitting on the protestors and yelling racial slurs at them. When the young demonstrators held their resolve, they were beaten with wooden handles that had not yet had metal ax heads attached.

While the violence was first aimed at the lunch counter demonstrators, it quickly escalated to include any African American in sight of the white mob. Police stood idly by watching the beatings until members of a black street gang called “The Boomerangs” attempted to protect those being attacked. At that point police night sticks joined the baseball bats and ax handles.

Bloodied and battered victims of the vicious beatings fled to a nearby church where they sought refuge and comfort from prayer and song. Eventually the white mob dispersed.

While I haven't heard yet whether there will be any local commemoration of this sad event in our history, I'm convinced that what we're seeing now in Portland is just a preview of what will happen here when the cowardly-lyin' traitor accepts the GOP nomination.

As if having the thousands of unmasked plague vectors descending on us -- at the peak of hurricane season -- wasn't going to be enough!

Which is to say there's a decent chance they'll screw it up. Say they're not coordinating with local officials (check), at some point a citizen will think a vanload of masked thugs is in fact trying to kidnap said citizen. If that person being targeted has good reflexes, it might be enough time for them to run, with the vanload of masked thugs in pursuit. Once they're away from their getaway vehicle, they might find themselves rounding a corner in hot pursuit, and finding themselves outnumbered by enough concerned citizens to detain the vanload of masked thugs for local authorities to cuff, fingerprint, and book. Mug shots will be a decent deterrent for other vanloads of masked thugs.

Not a better-than-average odds thing to happen, but maybe 30% chance that the stable jeniuses in charge will manage to create this (or some equally boneheaded scenario) as an outcome. Never underestimate stupidity
