Green shoots....

My hardcore Republican neighbor:

"I can't support Trump anymore. I told myself his weaknesses had to be accepted to avoid economic disaster, and that he would prove himself an effective leader. I was wrong. I regret it. His virus response, and his authoritarianism are too much. I've never voted for a Democrat for President before. But I will vote for Biden. Someone has to stop this."

When I mentioned (with some sympathy) that there was plenty of evidence he is an incompetent racist, he just said, "I've learned quite a bit in the last few years."

1. Really

He learned quite a bit in the last few years only because he refused to look before now, all the data was available before the election they just didn't take time to really look..

3. Yeah....

in his defense, he had the good grace to seem embarrassed. I did not press him (that can come later), but it does strike me how much he was willing to overlook. And I still not quite sure for what. He seems to have simply bought it to a faulty narrative.

2. Under a President Clinton, we would have had

“economic disaster “? Did we have that under the previous President Clinton? They’ll admit they made a “mistake”, but not the misogyny.

4. He seemed to buy into this narrative that Democrats were....

... going to raise his taxes. He's middle class, and WAY below the income levels we're talking about for raising taxes. To me it absolutely feels like willful ignorance. Still... I'll take his vote this fall.

5. I was very happy that my niece, a hardcore MAGA, has come around recently.

She said last week "We've got to get Trump out of office".

Her attraction to Republican politics seems to be God and Country based. She believed that the GOP is the Party for religious Christians and Patriots, and she identifies with both of these things. I'm thrilled that she is not so deep down the hole that she can't turn back.
