Why did Walter Reed give trump a dementia test? They don't just give this test to just anyone. What are they seeing? And did he really pass?

(38,187 posts)It's about time someone thought about these questions. Obviously, something is up or they would not have him taking such a test. That's an alarm signal.

(54,770 posts)"As of January 2011, physicians are required to include detection of cognitive impairment as part of their health risk assessment in the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit . . . . . .
"Why observation alone wont work. Physicians often fail to identify cognitive impairment until it becomes quite severe. This failure to diagnose may be due to time constraints, a focus on other health measures, or the lack of appropriate and usable tools. . . . . ."

Docs use various tests -- some just ask you to remember a few names, draw a clock, etc. Others use formal tests like trump took.
However, I don't think trump would have taken such a test if he knew what was going on. While some folks might brag about it as humor, trump honestly thinks he accomplished something by identifying an elephant, snake, etc., assuming he actually "passed" the test.

(146,281 posts)some kind of cognitive test each year. At my clinic, it's just drawing the clock face and remembering three words for a few minutes. Its a simple screening. They also run through a depression questionnaire. It's required for the exam.
So, while they don't give a dementia test to everyone, people on Medicare get one every year if they take advantage of the free wellness checkup, which they should. It's the only time I even see my primary care doctor in most years. He prescribes my medications for a full year, after getting my blood work numbers.

(13,883 posts)connection with my annual Medicare wellness checkup. They ask you to walk up a corridor and back and observe and time you. They ask you to draw the famous clock and give you 3 words to remember and repeat a few minutes later (not 20 minutes later). They ask you how things have been in your life over the last year and if anything has changed. That is it. NOW, I have been to the emergency room twice over the last 3 years, once for a breathing problem and once when I shattered my pelvis in a fall. Neither time did they give me a cognitive test. Even with my fall, all they asked me is how my head felt and if I had hit it. No cognitive test.
The logical conclusion is that Trump had some sort of a cerebrovascular accident and a (more detailed) cognitive test was called for.
The fact that the man seems obsessed with the test and has failed to accurately describe it tells me that he has some permanent impairment that has affected his judgment which was lousy to start with.
