At the golf course today - I really couldn't believe it

That not a soul was wearing a mask? No not that.

This young woman was driving a golf cart. If today was her birthday she at most could have been 15.
I couldn’t believe it.

The adult riding with her had not practiced or even warmed up and shot a 91 (44-47 with two ⛄️ 8’s on the back)

Wait what? How do you know....

Today is my little girl’s 15th birthday. SHE’s 15!!!!. Yeah I let her drive the cart.
I can’t find the DU thread when I announced that I had spawned.

I can’t believe she’s 15. Great kid. Old soul.

Jul 2020

We have a few of our regular crowd that can only break 90 if they got hot.
Most of the guys are low to mid 80s guys.
Three of us are regular 70s shooters.
And we play pretty much every day.
So, a 91 after not playing in a year is great!!!
How'd your daughter do? Ok?
She have fun?

At 64, I don't have the distance I used to.
Probably cost me 4 strokes. Driver-5 iron when it used to be D-W. Birdies are tougher now.
At 40, I was a plus 3.

I'd say that's pretty special for someone who was never a pro golfer, IMHO.

I mean it depends on the course somewhat, but still ...

24. Plus 3 is awesome level of golf
Wed Jul 29, 2020, 05:56 PM
Jul 2020

I'd say maybe 1 in 1000 golfers ever reach that level.

Lowest I ever got was 2 when I was a hotshot teenager winning junior trophies all the time. I think I could have been a better golfer if I had learned to play lefty instead of righty. I am left handed but my grandfather only had righty clubs so I learned that way. Some say it's an advantage but I'm not buying it. My overly strong left hand wants to twist and turn all the time.

Finally within the past decade I learned to hit wedges and chip shots and putt left handed. That really improved my game, dropping my handicap from 10 back down to 5. It feels like stealing for the short shots to actually start dependably on line. My right hand at lead is wonderfully passive.

Of course, people I play with for the first time think it's amusing when I suddenly switch to the other side at let's say 100 yards. I'd like to get that out to 150 range but I don't play enough to master those lefty clubs that require more of a full swing.

They'd annihilate the courses folks like us play.
Our course is par 72, rated 69.8 with a 124 slope.
Pros would average 61 out there. If I'm at 61 after 15 holes, I'm quite happy!

38. It is breathtaking how good the pros are
Wed Jul 29, 2020, 06:52 PM
Jul 2020

It doesn't come across nearly as well on TV. When I take someone to an event for the first time invariably their mouth is ajar in astonishment. They can't even see the ball land that far in the distance, let alone come to grips that it landed in the intended spot. I can still relate to LPGA distance, but not PGA.

The occasional viewer gets lulled into complacency when the announcer says he needs to bend it around the corner to the right side of the green. Ho-hum it played out that way. It drives me nuts when I read the comparison to darts on grass. They have no idea how difficult it is to make every connection from intent through split second of impact, along with judging variables like this matted lie as opposed to a flyer lie, etc.

Distance control is the huge variable. I'm thrilled when I strike the iron flush, even if it ends up 30 feet short or 30 feet long. Meanwhile the pros are pissed, either at the club selection or the swing.

It is incredible how close they hit the wedges. That is many strokes per round right there.

What's breathtaking is Kim Jung Un shooting 18 holes-in-one. And that was his first outing. All the pros were simply stunned into silence.

Plus some assorted lefty wedges. Once I got more comfortable hitting the lefty chips, pitches and wedges I got some better clubs in specific lofts like 50, 52, 54, 56. I can really punch down on those lefty shots with a nice crisp divot and medium-low ball flight with lots of spin.

Previously my righty wedges were too high and all over the place. The pros hit high irons but low aggressive wedges. Not until I switched to lefty did I understand how that was possible.

That's why the course rating is well under par.
I got advice from a club pro a LONG time ago.
"If you can't reach the fairway bunkers from the teebox you're playing, those are the wrong markers for you."
The converse was, if there's a longer tee box and you can carry over the bunkers those too, are the wrong tees.
After all, the bunkers are there for a reason!

I would have guessed 16. The ravages of age...

It was overwhelming favoritism she would he a great kid, in fact above that 99.99% number so popular here during that era.

91 is not bad at all. I'm sure the 8s were mostly bad bounces

Does she show any interest in playing golf?

I have one family member just starting to learn at age 18. He brought it up on his own two months ago, after thinking it was stupid when I attempted to get him started 9 years ago.

As long as it is accompanied by a promising swing. I've read many articles about that. The coaches go to events just to make sure the scoring average is verified by the ball striking potential.

Division I they look for more like 75 or 76. Division 3 would be mid to upper 80s in some situations.

College golf season is very long, one of the longest NCAA sports calendars of all. They have fall events and then the spring is so extensive and drawn out they don't play the NCAA championships until late May.

Given coronavirus implications I've read that the NCAA is considering condensing many sports schedules, not only for 2020-21 but going forward. Golf will most likely be impacted by that.

Started Grade One with him, and he was one of the 2 or 3 smallest kids in our grade. By the end of highschool, his nickname was Hoss, so....he grew some.

Pretty overweight, kinda slouched around, but was amazingly athletic, even so.

Once, a couple of friends told him they were going golfing, so he went along, despite having one arm in a cast. Played one-handed and still broke 100.

Man, I miss him. Liver cancer.
