the whole point of wearing a mask is to make the virus-laced droplets run into the outside of the mask instead of rushing straight into your mouth or nose.

but then it's possible to touch the outside of the mask, then touch your face, particularly your eyes, nose, or mouth, and then contract covid-19.

but of course, even in that scenario, the mask delayed you being exposed to covid-19 by the amount of time from when the droplets that would have gone straight into your mouth or nose and ran into the mask instead until the time you brought the virus from the outside of the mask you your face. it probably also lowered the viral load as well.
