For those of us who can afford to. So we can have some accounting of what is happening with delays in our mail or lost ballots?

(13,869 posts)At least in my state, they must be deposited in the regular mail.
Otherwise, you are adding significant work to the Election offices and PO in having to sign and return proofs of delivery.

(1,474 posts)I live in a small rural town, and the election office is in our city halfway between my house and my clinic. I always deliver my ballot to the dropbox at the election office. It's not that I don't trust the mail system, it's that I don't want the state of Washington to pay $0.49.
As far as I know, every election office in every county will accept a ballot if you bring it to them.

(15,082 posts)The Post Office is already slammed and the Elections office will be as well.
I agree with the other posters that you should find a way to drop it off at your county elections office.

(102,225 posts)that allow us to trace it all the way through until ultimately counted. That is how ALL states should do. Our Secretary of State has repeatedly offered to assist other state and local voter registrars and SOS.
It isn't that hard. Just the will to do so.
But as others have suggested, dropping the ballot off in person is a very good option--either at the county/city registrar's office or one of their officially designated drop boxes.

(2,336 posts)Not sure but I think certified mail requires an extra step when received, so could potentially increase the workload of an already ridiculously overburdened system.

(17,616 posts)...and our post office is small and understaffed and theres always a line. I may drop it off at the court house just to keep the PO from being bogged down as we are ALL mail in in our state.
As it is, I have to go to the PO and HAND DELIVER to a PO clerk a birthday card that was returned to me because its over 1/4 inch thick! I had one returned 2 months ago as well. We are getting mail back with a easily removed sticker ( and stamps not cancelled) over the address stating that because of 'security reasons' there are now restrictions on the type of mail that can be picked up by the carrier.. (altho its picked up and then returned to me days later).
When I go in there Im going to ask them if the sticker is part of the effort to slow down the mail.
