(11 posts)we certainly have differences with them but ...the enemy of my enemy... the best way to get to trump is mock him. they know that. IF America survives this (i give it a 50/50 shot) we can resume our battle against these conservative members of the CRUEL PARTY---i suggest that be how they're referred to going forward.....THE CRUEL PARTY

(6,145 posts)As an African-American, this does nothing for me. There's nothing special about white moms compared to the other protesters.
I'd like to know what it invokes in white people.

(17,337 posts)The Lincoln Project hits all the right notes with these ads.
At the moment they are excellent allies.

(6,145 posts)Have been protesting for decades about the murders of black people at the hands of whites. And police have been violently confronting them for years, frequently with no press coverage at all. "Riots get covered, not protests."
Nothing about this ad is new for me as a person of color.
This is the government that put children in cages.
Government abuse of the people - not news.
Government abuse of WHITE people - new news.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a Jew.
Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak for me.

(17,337 posts)Along with Hillel the Elder -
If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
If I am only for myself, what am I?
And, if not now, when?
If we are only for ourselves, what are we?
We certainly arent a society.
Without mutual responsibility, were a bunch of people fighting each other endlessly or, to quote Thomas Hobbes, we are in that condition which is called war; and such a war is of every man against every man.
Look, I've been at this stuff since the late 1960's. I've marched, I've protested, I've seen this all before, almost as bad as it is now. Don't discount allies. We need as many as we can get.
And remember - The perfect is the enemy of the good.
Peace.

(6,145 posts)I am a cynic. I think the reaction of white people to the murder of George Floyd is temporary. I don't know how long it will last, but I don't trust it. I think part of my cynicism is how quickly people rejected "Defund the Police".
To me, it is like how DUers feel about the Lincoln Project ads. Right now, Democrats and Lincoln Project are allies, against a common cause. But 4 years from now, enemies again.
Four years from now, will we have beaten police brutality and the unfair justice system? Or will #BlackLivesMatter have lost its power to move people?
Yeah, real cynical.
BUT! The audience of the ad is white moms. And I hope they are moved.
YOUR QUOTE IS WONDERFUL.
Didn't want you to think I missed it.

(17,337 posts)They have jumped ship in so many ways. Very few Republicans will trust them ever again. They have made themselves pariahs in their own tribe.
Look, as I said, I've been doing this stuff since the 1960's and it's a constant struggle. It's a cyclical thing, a bit like surfing. There are ups and downs and some days you just want to give up. But on the days when it's three steps forward - knowing that tomorrow it's going to be one step back - those are the days when it's all worth it.
Of course as a friend of mine says: I try to stay cynical, but some days I just can't keep up.
Glad you liked the Hillel quote.

(6,145 posts)There was an anti-lynching campaign in 1892. It's just not new to us. And the police brutality that is perpetrated on black women protesting is nothing new to us.
People are saying it's an ad targeted at the white moms who voted for him in 2016.
That makes sense to me.
I'm just surprised at the intensity of the reactions I'm seeing on DU.
Ms. Toad
(33,992 posts)But:
1. I tire easily of one group of people being elevated over others (whether it is white moms, or vets, or christians, etc.) This feels like another of those
2. It seems to me to center whites, at a time when blacks should be playing central roles. (I got blasted for saying that a week agor or so. But the people blasting me/that thought whose race I know are all white.)
That said - it may be an effective counter to white suburban moms with a conscience who are offended by Trump's promise to save suburbia for them.

(2,710 posts)Yes, all too true.
Not strictly troops which refer to military branches. These are militarized law enforcement put together by the DHS under Barr and Trump.
They often have no identifying insignia and wear camouflage inappropriately in a city environment. The video footage is real and went on night after night, drawing more and more resisters, including a wall of vets to back up the wall of moms.
They attacked peaceful protesters in Portland with clubs, tear gas, kidnapped people off the streets and grilled them, photographing them and their belongings before releasing them without charges. No due process.
Protests only increased. Oregon's public officials finally got them to back off and leave last Friday I believe.

Thanks for the nice welcome! My heart really goes out to the protesters. They're all really making a difference. Hope the corrupt kidnappers have their insurance paid up! What they've done is unconstitutional & illegal. Justice needs to prevail there. We also need to impeach Barr. Trump should have been impeached. Believe lots of Republicans are regretting the fact that they didn't stand up to Trump. Democracy dies in darkness & thank goodness for "good trouble"! Take care.
