(16,485 posts)My father was offered a position with Lockheed to head a department in Marietta, Georgia in the Spring of 1964. My Mother put her foot down and said. "Over my dead body are we leaving California and moving to the South."
I remember that conversation and my mother was convinced that moving us to Georgia would not work out well. We had several strikes against us. 1) We were white. 2) Of a more liberal mind set, thus outspoken. 3) Catholic. 4) My other had a deep fear of the KKK. 5) 3 daughters that could be in danger from other white girls of different opinions.
Turns out, she was right. The deaths of 3 Civil Rights workers in Mississippi months later convinced my father that moving to Georgia was not in the best interest of our family and his career.

(4,098 posts)I remember I was in the backyard with my father, sister and brother. My mother appeared at the back door and told my father that they found the bodies.
I still recoil when I see that old footage of those days and the local ignoramuses that they interviewed.

That song at the end when they had the closing credits, reminded me strongly of prodigal son by the Stones. Not sure if the Stones wrote that song though.
