Alaska Airlines says 4,200 workers may face layoffs in October
Alaska Airlines said Monday night it warned 4,200 workers across Washington, Alaska, Oregon and other states that they could lose their jobs Oct. 1, blaming the cuts on a dramatic drop in air travel that in July gave the company the worst loss in its history.
The SeaTac-based airline filed several notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act in Washington and Alaska, with plans to cut 1,914 jobs in those two states, including 1,583 in SeaTac and Seattle and another 331 in Anchorage.
Reducing our workforce is one of the hardest realities of this crisis. Were making tough decisions to right-size Alaska Airlines for future success, but it means were losing fantastic people.," Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Cailee Olson said in an emailed statement.
"Across Alaska Airlines, 4,200 employees received WARN notices or were laid off," Olson added, noting that the Seattle cuts represented about 20% of its current total workforce, and included customer service agents, flight attendants and aircraft maintenance technicians.
