More than 1,000 additional Maryland poll workers have dropped out over the past week, leaving the state with little more than 60 percent of the election judges it needs and boosting pressure on Gov. Larry Hogan to abandon plans to open every voting precinct.
After dire warnings from local elections administrators on Wednesday, the Maryland State Board of Elections scheduled a Friday vote to ask Hogan (R) to change course and open as few as 90 large voting centers statewide instead of 1,848 neighborhood precincts.
Dismayed by long lines and delays in the June 2 primary, Hogan had pledged the usual number of in-person voting options for the Nov. 3 election, despite the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The success or failure of this election is in your hands, David Garreis, president of the Maryland Association of Election Officials, told the state board Wednesday as he delivered the sobering statistics about election-judge dropouts.
Local election administrators are planning for a high probability the public health crisis will worsen in September and October, and election judges will begin to quit en masse, Garreis said. Once the majority of the election judges quit, there is not going to be a backup.

I've applied for an absentee ballot. At least any Maryland voter can get one.

(130,725 posts)'Thank you for your email regarding the upcoming election. The State will send all voters an application for a mail-in ballot along with a postage paid return envelope at the end of August. Voters should complete the application and send it back to the local board of elections as soon as possible. If a voter has already requested a mail-in ballot, they will not receive the application.
The actual ballots will become available at the end of September. Applications for mail-in ballots will be accepted until October 20th. After that time, voters will need to either vote in person during early voting or on election day.
I hope this clarifies any questions. Please let me know if you have any questions.

(12,462 posts)Because he is republican.
He did a few things right, yes.
But he has the same toxic beliefs that republicans have. Like neoliberalism. Just because he is less blatant about it does not mean he's a "safe"republican.

(1,292 posts)I would love to hear that Maryland Democrats step up to serve as poll workers. I understand that its a risk, a life and death risk. But democracy is worth it. Many, many men and women have fought and suffered and died for this country to preserve democracy. Its usually those in the military. This time it is civilians who can fill a dangerous void.
I suppose voter suppression by reduction of poling places is a feature of the Trump COVID strategy, not a bug.

(25,812 posts)that a lot of the people who normally work the polls on election day are over 70 and simply aren't willing to go sit in a school gymnasium or wherever the polling place is for 12 hours.
There needs to be a serious attempt to recruit younger people for the job. High school and college students could be a good idea, especially given that most schools are not going to be having full-time in school classes.
