She and he had grown up together, attending the same schools from kindergarten all the way through senior year of high school. He moved away, but she and her husband owned a business in that area, and they kept in touch. She was a joyful little lady, all 4'10" of her, and he would visit her whenever he returned home. They just celebrated their 50th high school reunion this past year, and I took pictures of the 10-15 kids who were part of that kindergarten through 12th grade group. We disagreed on politics, as she and her husband were typical Texas conservatives, but she was a gracious woman and didn't let that stand in the way of the friendship. When Trump got elected she toned down her rhetoric, to the point that she said she was ashamed he ran as a Republican and she couldn't wait to vote him out come November.
Well, she didn't quite make it to November. She and her husband (apparently through operating their business) came in contact with a customer who was sick, and both she and her husband ended up testing positive for COVID-19. He made it; she didn't. She passed away today. It took her hard and it took her fast -- she got sick on July 29th and on August 5th, she's gone. My husband is one part inconsolable and another part furious. Yes, she was in her early 70s, and probably in all likelihood had some pre-existing conditions. But she was living a full life, with kids, grandkids, her business, friends and family. Some asshat who didn't think it necessary to quarantine themselves gave this to her, and now she's dead.
What can one say in a time like this? I'm sorry for your loss? She lived a good life? Your President is an asshole and your Party let you down?
It just sucks, and all I can do is hug my husband and hope that we stay healthy.

(1,102 posts)I would hate to blame the victim but was she wearing a mask and staying away at least 6 feet?

(1,040 posts)... according to friends she socially distanced, wore a mask and did what she could to protect herself while still operating her business for her family and her employees.

(5,639 posts)It did not need to happen. All it would have taken is common sense.

(13,776 posts)It's murder. I'm sorry, that's what I think. Someone who couldn't put a damn piece of fabric on their face for two minutes killed a lovely woman.
And Trump is an accessory to murder. He genuinely is. Whether he didn't want to set a good example and wear a mask because he was afraid of his stupid makeup smearing, or because he just wanted to pretend it's la-la land and everything is fine, your husband lost a friend because Trump is a goddamn narcissistic moron. Trump and his stupid contrarian asshat cult members, aided and abetted by the people at Fox and OAN, are killing people EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY.
This is a time for introspection and sorrow, not pure anger, but... it's a time for anger. It really is. I'm so sorry for your husband's loss and for her family's heartbreak.

(5,406 posts)But we need to start charging the assholes, who are infected and not taking precautions, WITH MANSLAUGHTER.
Start locking up these fucking non mask wearing jerk offs....that will slow the stupidity and the infections.

(100,028 posts)And yeah really there are no words to describe a loss like that, especially this year in the time of a major pandemic. It really sucks.

(6,906 posts)This is one of nearly 160,000 similar stories in the U.S. Multiply that number by the dozens of people affected by each death, by the family members, and by the medical personnel who are witnesses first-hand.
Thats what a sociopath like Trump cant understandscale. Hes not a businessman with 40 years experience, hes a man with one-years experience 40 times over. He doesnt feel a thing from one death, much less the pain of the millions of other people affected.
