'My worst nightmare': Laid-workers endure loss of $600 aid

An unemployed makeup artist with two toddlers and a disabled husband needs help with food and rent. A hotel manager says his unemployment has deepened his anxiety and kept him awake at night. A dental hygienist, pregnant with her third child, is struggling to afford diapers and formula.

Around the country, across industries and occupations, millions of Americans thrown out of work because of the coronavirus are straining to afford the basics now that an extra $600 a week in federal unemployment benefits has expired.

“My worst nightmare is coming true,” said Liz Ness, a laid-off recruiter at a New Orleans staffing agency who fears she will be evicted next month without the added help from Washington. “Summer 2020 could be next year’s horror movie.”

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are struggling to work out an agreement that would restore some federal jobless aid. Even if they do reach a deal, the amount is likely to be less than $600. And by the time the money starts flowing, it could be too late for many Americans who are already in dire straits.

213 dollars a week. Think about it a bit. And you are only eligible for 12 or 16 weeks total.

Yup,the beauty of ALEC,while we were enjoying a Obama Economy,Koch and Uilihn as well as the Waltons were f---n with 20 plus States Unemployment Insurance System. Think about it.

Folks here in Nevada are enjoying the ALEC nightmare,40 million dollar system that is one major Joke. Thanks Sandoval, you left a GOP turd behind, and you are screwing Millions. Know wonder he moved to California.

As all know,it is a sliding scale bases on gross earnings. During the Walker debacle in Wis,remember a family member getting 106 dollars as well as 16 dollars for SNAP.

Mississippi 213 is the Max.

Again, while our Nation was working it's way out of the Cheney nightmare, our friends at ALEC rig the system in favor of the Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable.

Now we are seeing folks who are going back to work only to be laid off at weeks end. This was in the Forecast Models way back in March.

I was out of work for all of 2009 and received $362"per week. For 12 months. That was $18,800 for the year before taxes.

This is the first time there has ever been additional Federal $$ to supplement state unemployment.

Retired in 03' with a good Pension. Was so friggin lucky, but, flunked that idea with in 6 months. House Boss said go find something to do you are driving me nuts.

Believe my former Work Mates were receiving about the similiar in Minnesota. Use to be,Minny,Wis,Mich, and Ill as well as Ohio used to keep their Unemployment systems very similiar. But,that was before our Labor Unions were destroyed for the most part.

Do recall receiving 296 dollars a week in 1984 when my employer took us into Bankruptcy Court. Our Guys were illegible for 24 weeks at that time, but how times have changed.

Was wondering what laid workers were and why they were being persecuted.

My company pays well and we just laid off 13,000 people permanently nationwide. My state's max UE benefit is $362 a week which basically means a layoff is a catastrophic event for most people. The max UE benefit in my state would pay my mortgage and not much else. I have savings that would last a few months and then I would need to go into my retirement to make ends meet or max out some credit cards.

People in the US don't get that getting laid off in a modern country isn't supposed to be the end of the world. Most industrialized western Democracies have social safety nets that make getting laid off much easier and less traumatic.

In fact, my company also has an office in the UK, we are going to layoff workers there, but it takes 6 months to do so because of protections for workers there. People in the US are used to working so hard and then having no social safety net to protect it, it's not right.
