Elizabeth Warren Dominates Scott Brown In First Debate (Points Out-If Brown Wins-Inhofe Heads EPA)

Elizabeth Warren Dominates Scott Brown In First Debate

At the end of the day, Republican Scott Brown wants Mitch McConnell to run the Senate & Mitt Romney to run the White House. #wbzdebate

By: Jason EasleySeptember 20th, 2012

Brown jabbed at Warren’s annual income, and kept coming back to the claim that she wants to raise taxes. Scott Brown’s strategy is simple. He is hoping to peel off conservative Democrats by portraying Warren as an extreme tax and spend liberal. Warren hit Brown for voting to raise student loan rates, and opposing closing a loophole that is used by the wealthy. Brown’s consistent reply when his voting record was brought is that Warren is lying about his record.

Brown tried several different personal attacks on Warren including her heritage, income, and the Traveler’s insurance case. Sen. Brown seemed willing to talk about anything except his voting record, unless he was talking about the votes where he sided with Obama. Brown tried to appeal to union voters with the Keystone pipeline lie, which Warren knocked down. Warren scored big by pointing out that if Brown wins, and the Republicans take control of the Senate, global warming denier Jim Inhofe will be in charge of oversight of the EPA.

Warren kept returning to the theme that women and the middle class need a senator that they can depend on all of the time. Elizabeth Warren has probably surprised a lot of people including the Brown campaign by going toe to toe with Sen. Brown. It was hard to believe that this was her first ever debate. She was strong, and most importantly she passed the eyeball and ear test. She looked and sounded like a United States Senator.

Scott Brown wasn’t horrible, but in a Blue State where Obama is popular, any conservatism in his record presents a risk. Elizabeth Warren did an excellent job showing voters the difference between a Republican who is trying to buddy up to Obama in order to save his job, and a real progressive Democrat.

I would vote for Warren of course, but for those on the fence watching the debate I think she didn't come across well. Brown obviously is the politician here -- he addressed the camera, prepared ready-to-run hit lines, was animated and frankly looked comfortable being on camera (clothes or not). I have great respect for Warren but this was not her forum and it showed.

I sure hope there aren't any more debates and that there's enough time to work this small cramp out because it is critical to the make up of the Senate.

He can run from his record but she kept pushing it on him. And the way she addressed how he's basically taking America hostage unless billionaires get tax cuts. To me, she came across as the every day person vs. a generic say anything politician.

she got out some VERY important messages, tying him to some horrible votes (against Equal Pay for Equal Work, FOR the Blunt Amendment, FOR oil subsidies). She also made it very clear what a Republican controlled Senate MEANS for this country (and I can't IMAGINE that this won't play well in MA).

small group of moderates who don't like the fact that Warren is pushing "we built that together" or the fact that she is a symbol of anti-Wall Street corruption and pro regulation.

They are quick to jump on anything she does. Remember the DNC speech? Well-received, won her accolades and helped her enormously in the polls. Within a minute of her speech, they were out with the "I hated it," "she looked weak" memes.

She kicked Brown's ass. Period.

This is part of an article written for The City Sentinel (a paper in Oklahoma City)

"Oklahoma debate champion and advocate for middle class families becomes Senate hopeful

By Darla Shelden
Contributing Writer

-snip-

Born in Oklahoma City, Warren attended grade school in Norman and graduated from Northwest Classen High School, in Oklahoma City, where she was named “Oklahoma’s top high-school debater.”

-snip-

Joe Pryor, Edmond real estate consultant and former debate team member said, “Northwest Classen was the No. 1 debate team in the state and Elizabeth was on the number one team with Karl Johnson. We debated some pretty weighty topics like socialized medicine, free trade, and proliferation of nuclear weapons. “Elizabeth was certainly easy to like and she was always about the smartest person in the room.”

Warren said in an interview at UC Berkeley, “I was 16 years old when I graduated from high school and I got a full scholarship in debate that included room, board, tuition, books and a little spending money. It was a fabulous scholarship at George Washington University, if I would debate for them.”

-snip-

“Elizabeth had, and by accounts still has, an extremely quick, sharp and inquisitive mind,a drive for excellence that was never satisfied with less than her very best, and a remarkable work ethic. Those qualities, combined with an uncanny power of persuasion, made her a formidable debater indeed, and I was grateful every day that she was my colleague and not my opponent,” said Johnson..."

I think she did well in the first half, but she got brutalized by that asbestos thing. She HAS to come up with a good answer for that or it could cause some problems.
