Let me try to channel the Trump Republican Party's current message to the people of the United States of America.
"Get back to work you lazy, good-for-nothing bums! We know your game here. You just want a handout."
"No job, you say? Your employer went out of business?"
"That's tough shit! Get a new job! Do "something new" like US Senior Administration Official Ivanka Trump told you!"
"No food? Getting evicted? Being foreclosed on? Sick from the virus? Kids to worry about? Your problem. You lazy, good-for-nothing deadbeats!"
"THIS president will not cater to your laziness and greed, Americans! And we, the Trump-loyalist Republican Party will back him to the hilt. There will be no 'rescue mission' this time. We're going to do nothing and just let the pandemic and the bad economy eat you and your family alive. It's both God's will and, according to Republican economic dogma and morality, it serves you right.
"Our Republican Party's beneficent leader, President Donald Trump, is kind-hearted, though. He has a soft spot for many of the American people. The whip will be cracked on all Americans, and austerity will be the rule. But our leader will spare many. We, the Republican Party, are giving him the authority to spare some people and hand out favors (funded by deductions from Social Security and Medicare revenue) at his discretion by fiat.
"You think it's us, the Trump Republican Party? You think President Trump botched this whole thing and we helped him do the botching? That just shows how dumb, misinformed, and ungrateful you are for the fantastic, heroic, tireless work of our leader. It's not us, America. It's you!"
"Any complaints?"

(34,661 posts)Just had this discussion with our oldest Son. Austerity is a go to thing with Conservative Political Parties world over. And yes, there has and is rumblings by the Hard Right for quite some time to protect the Monied Class for the Working Poor by Doling out certain perks as to keep the Minions from storming the Castle Walls.
Recall William Buckley yapping about this policy on PBS way back when.

Great post. Thanks! You captured the tone of it all well.
