Because I think there would be some Constitutional problems with a general election where people were "early-voting" before either of the major parties had even formally named their nominees. (For example, every presidential ballot I've ever seen included the names of both the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, and we don't even have the latter yet.)

I mailed my absentee ballot a couple of weeks ago. There is a high profile Miami mayoral race but otherwise it was primarily non-partisan judicial races. It took me a heck of a long time to decipher those races to make sure I was never voting for a right winger. One race had two wingnuts opposing each other so I skipped it entirely
