Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer both warned that President Donald Trump's Saturday executive actions won't work and ultimately take money from workers, Social Security and Medicare.
Pelosi and Schumer responded Sunday morning to Trump's signing of several executive actions on extending federal unemployment, payroll tax cuts and other stimulus relief package payouts. Despite Congress having failed for weeks to come to any agreement, Pelosi said bluntly the Republicans simply "don't have the money" to follow through on what Trump signed.
"What he put forth is not even workable," Pelosi told CNN's State of the Union Sunday. "You're acting as if there's some great big thing the Republicans are proposing ... We were willing to come down $1 trillion, but that doesn't mean the needs of Americans have come down."
Pelosi said the Federal Reserve has repeatedly cautioned Washington lawmakers to pay individual Americans and businesses up-front before the country's financial crisis deepens. "Pay now or pay later," Pelosi said she was advised. She criticized Republicans for not renewing the $600 in weekly unemployment benefits, although she said Trump's $400 plan would be a compromise she'd at least consider versus the $200 put forth by congressional Republicans.

(10,533 posts)STOP talking in technocratic 'process' words
START using words like SCAM, THEFT, and FRAUD that have emotional resonance
These are the times when it's apparent that Pelosi and Schumer need to pass the torch

(10,533 posts)We are in not one but multiple compounding emergencies and they are excellent legislative strategists but weak at political messaging
We need boldness and directness not more incrementalism and furrowing of brows at their 'colleagues across the aisle'
You can deny that all you want but it's the truth. This whole generation of leaders from Schumer to Pelosi to Hoyer and onward has had their time. They don't truly understand the threat that we face and how to address it. They are following 'protocol' and releasing weak statements while a Russian asset and his fascistic party leads our country into the grave.

(46,080 posts)if there were a congressional compromise this week, would Trump sign it? Would it nullify his so-called Executive Orders?

trump can say he laid out a plan with the expectation that Democrats and Republicans would reach a compromise and provide people meaningful relief. Yeah, we know it BS, but there will we some people who say $300/$400 was better than nothing.

(68,552 posts)unless your governor asks for it and raises it by $100. And I doubt Trump has the money...he won't want to admit he lied so I am hoping a deal is reached...Democrats should let him wallow in his lies.
