I am a night worker who has been using self-service at the post office after hours for many years - I just tried to send a package to someone in Ohio - I've mailed to him several times before using self-service, with no problem - now suddenly it "CANNOT FIND THAT ADDRESS" and I will have to go in "during regular hours". No doubt this is to make the lines longer at the post office to discourage people from using them. And we know REPUKES ARE ACTIVELY TRASHING USPS IN AN EFFORT TO TO FUCK WITH THE ELECTION. Democrats need to make this issue a HUGE priority.

(21,424 posts)but what surprises me is why they are doing it NOW......... there are months to go before ballots even start getting sent out. wouldn't it make much more sense to "spring" this trap some time in October in an effort to make ballots late? Right now they aren't hurting anything except... regular mail, and leaving a LOT of time for Democrats to bring this to light and let states either fight this crime or make plans for things like drop boxes (or for people to just say screw it, i'm going to the polls).

(44,962 posts)In fact in some states more GOPers vote by mail. Springing it a week before the election won't just hurt Democrats.
The goal is chaos and a pissed-off electorate. Not for Trump to actually get more votes.

(2,680 posts)Jennifer Cohn, journalist, attorney, and election security advocate, makes a plausible case that by undermining confidence in voting by mail voters will turn to the electronic voting machines that may be able to be tampered with.
The mail-in ballot provides a paper trail.
That's not to say there are no concerns about mail-in ballots not being counted.

(3,605 posts)Not that it makes any sense, but it gives his orangeness a sense that he is doing something even if it's badly timed and ultimately counterproductive. Whoever gave him this idea is probably in ascendance right now because it's something he could move on that nobody can stop and is "working," and even if it implodes next month there is probably something else totally unrelated that will be put in motion on another suggestion that is the real goal of the person who isn't a fucking idiot.

(5,468 posts)From Wikipedia:
In 1971, the Post Office Department was re-organized into the United States Postal Service, an independent agency of the executive branch. Therefore, the postmaster general is no longer a member of the Cabinet and is no longer in the line of presidential succession. The postmaster general is now appointed by nine "governors", appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate. The governors, along with the postmaster general and the deputy postmaster general, constitute the full Postal Service Board of Governors.

(16,906 posts)He is going to do everything he can to mess with mail in ballots, the very job trumpig sent him
into the USPS to do. With that in mind we should be telling voters to be making arrangements
to hand deliver their ballots to election offices and the sooner the better, no last minute stuff.
Should also encourage more drop off ballot boxes in secure well traveled locations to prevent
tampering.

(44,962 posts)In fact they tend to be older, which means it's more dangerous for them to be voting in person due to covid targeting elderly. You'd think they would be upset over this.

(3,524 posts)if someone dies as a result of the actions (directed) by the man in charge of the Post Office, if he can be charged via State Charges. For instance the delay results in someone not obtaining their medications in time - and died as a result. I also wonder if the head of the Post Office can be charged from several states - for any harm as a result of actions taken by person.

(6,011 posts)My wife is in USPS management at a large Processing and Distribution Center in the Chicago area.
She tells me that everything is operating as normal there. She told me that there has been a very slight downturn in mail since the COVID-19 shutdowns have affected business mail, but it's minimal, and better than expected. She says that she will know the minute something goes wrong, even if she gets no orders from above to make any changes that could slow down the work at her facility.
If there is any kind of slowdown happening, it's being perpetrated at Area Offices (your local Post Office, where the Carriers work out of). Not accusing the Carriers themselves, but a slow down could be put into place there. The Carriers can only deliver the mail they are given. There could be mail sitting on trucks somewhere that was supposed to be taken to the Area Offices, and the Carriers would be none the wiser.
Another poster mentioned online services being down. That's another monkey wrench in the gears.
I'd imagine we can expect some whistle blowing soon.
On a personal note, the mail that comes to my house has not been affected, for whatever that is worth to anyone.
