Me: When's the last time you met somebody who hadn't heard of you?
Jeter: Oh, more recently than you think. Not everybody's a baseball fan.
Me: What'd you say to this person?
Jeter: "Thank you. That makes me happy."
Me: Who are you voting for?
Jeter: Obama.
Me: Secret dream job?
Jeter: Own a team.
Me: Which team?
Jeter: A good team.

(4,507 posts)I reported in that clubhouse over a four game series and Jeter was unfailingly polite, to the point of acknowledging someone that he'd seen over the last few days.
Paul O'Neill was the nicest one of all, but both of them are pure class in my book.
Posada was kind of a dick, lol.

(21,551 posts)Not saying there was a homosexual relationship at all. Just very affectionate.
They had a "bromance" and were very open about it... there are many photos and clips.
So I kind of find it hard to believe that A Rod is really homophobic.

(4,533 posts)For a story published in the January 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated, Rocker made a number of allegations stemming from his experiences in New York City and answering a question about whether he would ever play for the New York Yankees or the New York Mets. Rocker's response was considered racist, homophobic, and sexist:
I'd retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you're riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing... The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country? [3]
During the interview, he also spoke of his opinion of the New York Mets and their fans:
Nowhere else in the country do people spit at you, throw bottles at you, throw quarters at you, throw batteries at you and say, 'Hey, I did your mother last night she's a whore.' I talked about what degenerates they were and they proved me right.
The interview was conducted while driving to a speaking engagement in Atlanta. The reporter wrote that during the interview session, Rocker spat on a Georgia 400 toll machine and mocked Asian women. Also, he supposedly referred to black teammate Randall Simon as a "fat monkey"[citation needed].

(27,670 posts)2001 playoffs ~ Jeter throws out Giambi in one of the best plays of all time. I love baseball, and I could not believe this play when I saw it.
Derek Jeter is an amazing athlete and is the best all around shortstop in MLB history.
Start at 1:02 and watch carefully cuz "The Flip" happens so fast. Then they do some slo-mo of the play afterward.
Derek Jeter is all class.
msanthrope
(37,549 posts)Rizzuto and Berra threw out the opening pitches--then Rizzuto ran to the first-base line and flipped one to Bellinger with the same move that Jeter did to Posada. It was pandemonium in the Bronx, and Jeter had a truly stunned and grateful look on his face.
He is a class act. And the #2 will be on the wall the day after he retires.

(27,670 posts)I love the Yankees. In 1961, we went cross country, and were visiting relatives on Long Island, and my dad took us to Yankee Stadium to see the Yanks play the Angels.
Mantle, Maris, Skowron, Berra, Ford, Kubek, Richardson, Boyer. The year Maris hit 61, Mantle hit 54, and the Yankee team that year is considered by many to be the best baseball team ever.
I've been a rabid Yankees ever since, even though I grew up in the west.
After that, I knew exactly what wanted to be when I grew up; I wanted to be the first woman to ever play centerfield for the New York Yankees.
And yep, #2 will definitely be on the wall the day after DJ hangs up his spikes.
msanthrope
(37,549 posts)We agree on something.
I wanted to be the first female pitcher for the Yanks. Lefty.
Thanks to my family, I've been privileged to be at more Yankee moments than I can count.

(33,491 posts)that by the time he is done, he will be the greatest Yankee of all time. And yes, I see there are good arguments for Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle etc...
sadbear
(4,340 posts)The greatest Yankee of them all will forever be Steve Balboni.
hifiguy
(33,688 posts)ever because he would have been a no-brainer Hall of Famer as a pitcher even if he'd never hit a single home run. I think Jeter will be at the same level as DiMaggio and Gehrig, well in front of Mickey Mantle, among the Yankee greats. That he will be remembered as the greatest all-around player of his era - regardless of team - is pretty much a lead-pipe lock. And I hate the Yankees.
Ter
(4,281 posts)Probably would have had 3,800 hits, 650 home runs, and perhaps 2,800 RBI and a 3,000 game consecutive streak. It's so sad, he probably would have been ahead of Ruth with those numbers. What do you think?
hifiguy
(33,688 posts)I had to look up Gehrig's stats and was boggled. He probably would have hit close to 700 home runs and been around 4000 hits if he'd been able to play for five more seasons. Probably 2500-2600 RBIs too. Those are stupefying stats.
1. Ruth
2. Gehrig
3. DiMaggio
4. Jeter
5. Mantle
Pretty good company for the kid from Kalamazoo.
Ter
(4,281 posts)As a die hard baseball fan and stats-maniac, there is no way in hell he will surpass Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig. Surpassing Mantle and DiMaggio is also next to impossible. 5th best on a team with so many Hall of Famers is still a great accomplishment.
edhopper
(33,491 posts)An argument impossible to settle of course
He has more hits and a better average than both Mantle and DiMaggio, in fact he is the all time Yankees leader in hits. As well as the all time post season hits record.
In truth there is too much different in the game to really compare, but if it makes everyone happy I will say top 3 or 5.
Ter
(4,281 posts)He also doesn't have a better average than DiMaggio, if I recall correctly. I know Jeter is a lifetime .314 hitter, but isn't Joe D. in the .320 or so? Mantle you're right, he's just under .300.
On the All-Yankee Team, Lou is still Captain for life. I'm sure Jeter wouldn't mind stepping aside to give up that one.
