Attending a nominating convention

I've been to a number of professional or hobby-related conventions, and they have ranged from fun to meh. But somehow I just cannot get myself to imagine going to a nominating convention as a delegate and spending three days listening to political speeches.

Anybody else feel the same way? Just curious.

Some people like to see the upcoming future leaders of the Party.

Some people like the parties, symposia, workshops, conferences etc.

They can do it without their pants on (women too). And they can leave and watch a movie. It’s virtual.

On the other hand, no camaraderie, no networking, no parties.

It takes years of hard work to earn a slot as a national delegate. The 2016 convention was not that fun with sanders delegates booing John Lewis, Elijah Cummings and others as part of planned stunts (the Clinton campaign was warning her delegates in advance of these stunts), a mini riot at the Texas delegation breakfast when sanders delegates demanded that we condemn Clinton and change our votes to sanders and my daughter being yelled at and called the c-word by sanders delegates because she would not get me to change my vote.

There were fun things. I still smile at the memories of Bill Clinton playing with the balloons following the balloon drop. I sat near one of my law school classmates and we got to catch up. The Texas delegation sat immediately behind the Mass delegation and so I got to see Warren and shake hands with Barney Frank. I attended a convention related event where I got to hear John Lewis tell his preaching to chicken story sitting next to Kareem There were some great speeches including Michelle Obama and Mr. Khan. I brought back a ton of floor signs from the speeches and I got Joe Biden to sign three signs from his floor speech at a fund raiser. My daughter attended a number of the convention caucus events including the Jewish caucus. My daughter had a guest pass for the first night and got to hear Michele and play poke-mon Go (the convention site was a gym).

There is an unofficial rule in my area that National Conventions are meant to be once in a life time experiences I was never going to try for the current convention. The Texas and California delegations were scheduled to be at hotels near O'Hare airport and would have 4+ hour round trip bus trips. Despite the unofficial rule, I may try to go to a future national convention
