In a good way.
Not only is Kamala the right pick on paper - she's smart, experienced, progressive, ready to be president, etc. But she'll energize and inspire black voters, as well as many others, in a way that few other people could.
On Edit: it was just brought to my attention that this is my 10,000th post! How appropriate that this is the milestone!!!

(6,147 posts)I am not losing my effing mind.
Kamala was on the short list, so this is no surprise.
What I would like to see is that she uses her status as first-generation-American to speak to a lot of her brethren in that position, that she speak to the Indian and Asian communities, as well as the black community.
She is truly a "Person of Color". Far more than just a black woman.
It would be great to see her mobilize the Indian-American community.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)I was talking about how the black people I know are reacting.
The Asians I know (although I don't know as many) are reacting the same way.
There is plenty of time for me to think and talk about what she should do or debate whether she correctly identifies herself as a black woman.
Today, I'm just rejoicing and reveling in this wonderful moment.

(7,263 posts)Bernie's time to run for Prez is past. Frankly, I'm glad.
He is still effectively working to advance progressive ideals in the Senate. I love it.
He's energized a lot of people over the last 30 years. Like it or not.
I supported him in the primaries in 2016 and 2020...but I voted for President Hillary in 2016. Without regrets. Joe & Kamala will gladly get my vote. No regrets.
I want my far left liberal agenda to be advanced more then anyone, but I am also pragmatic.
No Republican will ever help that happen by definition. Conservative dogma is too entrenched.
But I can and do have a voice in the Democratic party. Been a Democrat since I was a toddler in 1964. Been a socialist since college. Been angry since 2000. Been Hopeful since 2008. Been a realist since 2016.

(6,147 posts)There are strong Bernie guys like you and Bernie-nuts like my husband who voted for Jill Stein.
I think there are lots of possibilities of outcomes in 2024, and it may be the year that Bernie-supporters find a younger, equally energizing candidate and flip the federal government on its ass.
I think in 2024 I will be open to a Bernie-like candidate. This year, I just want to get rid of Trump.

But since I'm the Whitest White Boy you will ever meet (trace my roots to the Mayflower, I was CAR, fuck, I have a Chief Justice in my bloodline), I defer to the opinions of the community of color, and some significant voices in that community have some reservations about her. Do you have any actual rebuttal to the content of my post?
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)but I wouldn't assume that they speak for you or lessen the value of your.opinion. Because no community is a monolith.
Pointing out that some black people "have reservations" about Harris is a rather discordant injection into a very happy and exciting and historic moment for the communities of color you claim to defer to, even if everyone in the community doesn't think exactly alike.

(4,741 posts)First off, as I said, my opinion is different from that which I quoted - I think Kamala is the absolute best choice, by far. That being said:
They are nothing if not anti-Trump. Their tagline is literally "The Blacker the Content the Sweeter the Truth". While I realize they probably are a biased source, if nothing else they are biased towards what is best for Blacks, which is a viewpoint I do think is worth hearing and incorporating.
Fer fook's sake, Michael Harriot, the author of the article I quoted, WHICH I DO NOT AGREE WITH, claims to be "World-renowned wypipologist. Getter and doer of "it." Never reneged, never will. Last real negus alive." Take your shit up with him.

(4,741 posts)Not deleting it, because the conversation around it is worthwhile.
I was trying to point out that a voice that I perceive as influential in the Black community (Michael Harriot at The Root) has some major reservations about Kamala. I am aware that no community is monolithic and saying "Tucker Carlson speaks for all Whites" would be wrong and stupid; that being said Fucker *is* influential in his chosen community.
I assumed The Root was more important than it was, and for that I apologize. For the content of my post, I do not apologize - take it up with Mr. Harriot, self-described as "World-renowned wypipologist. Getter and doer of "it." Never reneged, never will. Last real negus alive." https://www.theroot.com/author/michaelharriot @michaelharriot

Frankly, it says as much about him as it does about her.
For her - superior qualifications, guts, strength, brilliance, excellent track record of accomplishments, and more!
For him - after they jousted on that debate stage, and she stood up to him, he behaved like a true gentleman and showed her respect, and clearly doesn't hold grudges. He clearly recognizes talent, and a bridge to a bright future and real, tangible renewal in the Democratic party. And new power and muscle for women - Democratic women and others as well.

The base of our party in the south, Florida included, are African Americans. Especially women. They have kept the party here from totally dying over the last 10 years. If for no other reason I wanted a representative of the on the ticket. We are noW finally starting to see a spark in our party here and telling the group responsible for it to keep waiting for your turn was unacceptable. Normally a VP from California would have no impact on Florida. That is not the case now. Not hardly.
Picking her reassembles the Obama coalition that won Florida twice. If we organize and get out the vote we will win it again. And if we win Florida its game over.

by Jonathan Tamari, Laura McCrystal and Sean Collins Walsh, Posted: 42 minutes ago
/snip
Harris, a Californian whose father is from Jamaica and mother is from India, would be the first woman to serve as vice president. Her selection came after many Democrats urged Biden to pick a Black woman, arguing that the party needs a ticket that reflects its diversity and that of the country. The imperative only grew in recent months as protests against systemic racism swept the country, drawing in people of all races. Im so excited I can hardly talk, said Marian Tasco, a former member of Philadelphia City Council. For us to have an African-American woman be a candidate for vice president, that is just so exciting for me, having worked so long in the political arena.
Tasco, a longtime leader of the Northwest Coalition political machine, is one of the most influential figures in Philadelphia politics and an expert on voter turnout. She said many Black women, including members of the national sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, will be energized to help the campaign. Harris joined AKA while at Howard University. These women the AKAs, the Deltas, and the other organizations theyre so happy because they worked so hard to make a difference in this country for African-American women and for Black families, Tasco said. And that is happening.
Rogette Harris, chair of the Dauphin County Democrats, said it was very important that Biden complete his ticket with a woman of color. Number one, it was Black voters who pretty much gave him the nomination and he did not ignore that, said Harris, referring to the South Carolina primary voters who helped revive Bidens candidacy in February. Its time that were not just seen but were actually heard. And the only way to be heard is to be in positions of power.
Harris is also a groundbreaking pick for Asian Americans. Kamala Harriss story is the story of a changing, inclusive America. At a time of rapid change, she ties all our national threads together, said a statement from Neil Makhija, a Philadelphia attorney who heads IMPACT, a political group that backs Indian American candidates. Harris represents the future and promise of this country. Her candidacy is historic and inspiring. An estimated 1.3 million Indian Americans are expected to vote in this years election, including almost 200,000 in Pennsylvania, Makhija said.

My bad. Please forgive, I realized the faux-pas when you raised it.
I was going around the thinking person's viewpoint.
