Every black person I know is losing their effing minds right now

Last edited Tue Aug 11, 2020, 06:07 PM - Edit history (1)

In a good way.

Not only is Kamala the right pick on paper - she's smart, experienced, progressive, ready to be president, etc. But she'll energize and inspire black voters, as well as many others, in a way that few other people could.

On Edit: it was just brought to my attention that this is my 10,000th post! How appropriate that this is the milestone!!!

Kamala was on the short list, so this is no surprise.

What I would like to see is that she uses her status as first-generation-American to speak to a lot of her brethren in that position, that she speak to the Indian and Asian communities, as well as the black community.

She is truly a "Person of Color". Far more than just a black woman.

It would be great to see her mobilize the Indian-American community.

Bernie's time to run for Prez is past. Frankly, I'm glad.

He is still effectively working to advance progressive ideals in the Senate. I love it.

He's energized a lot of people over the last 30 years. Like it or not.

I supported him in the primaries in 2016 and 2020...but I voted for President Hillary in 2016. Without regrets. Joe & Kamala will gladly get my vote. No regrets.

I want my far left liberal agenda to be advanced more then anyone, but I am also pragmatic.

No Republican will ever help that happen by definition. Conservative dogma is too entrenched.

But I can and do have a voice in the Democratic party. Been a Democrat since I was a toddler in 1964. Been a socialist since college. Been angry since 2000. Been Hopeful since 2008. Been a realist since 2016.

I think there are lots of possibilities of outcomes in 2024, and it may be the year that Bernie-supporters find a younger, equally energizing candidate and flip the federal government on its ass.

They are nothing if not anti-Trump. Their tagline is literally "The Blacker the Content the Sweeter the Truth". While I realize they probably are a biased source, if nothing else they are biased towards what is best for Blacks, which is a viewpoint I do think is worth hearing and incorporating.

Fer fook's sake, Michael Harriot, the author of the article I quoted, WHICH I DO NOT AGREE WITH, claims to be "World-renowned wypipologist. Getter and doer of "it." Never reneged, never will. Last real negus alive." Take your shit up with him.

Not deleting it, because the conversation around it is worthwhile.

I was trying to point out that a voice that I perceive as influential in the Black community (Michael Harriot at The Root) has some major reservations about Kamala. I am aware that no community is monolithic and saying "Tucker Carlson speaks for all Whites" would be wrong and stupid; that being said Fucker *is* influential in his chosen community.

I assumed The Root was more important than it was, and for that I apologize. For the content of my post, I do not apologize - take it up with Mr. Harriot, self-described as "World-renowned wypipologist. Getter and doer of "it." Never reneged, never will. I'm either not reading or putting ANYONE on ignore who's trying to rain on my parade (at least for right now). This is NOT the thread in which to be critical (IMHO). I mean how long have we had to wait to be excited about something!?!? Biden/Harris 2020!!!

I think Harris was an inspired choice for so many reasons. I am so happy that black people are thrilled, they helped Joe become the nominee and they deserve this. As a woman, I can say women deserve this also.

I've liked her from the beginning. I hoped it would be Kamala Harris.

Frankly, it says as much about him as it does about her.

For her - superior qualifications, guts, strength, brilliance, excellent track record of accomplishments, and more!

For him - after they jousted on that debate stage, and she stood up to him, he behaved like a true gentleman and showed her respect, and clearly doesn't hold grudges. He clearly recognizes talent, and a bridge to a bright future and real, tangible renewal in the Democratic party. And new power and muscle for women - Democratic women and others as well.

This Turns. The. Page.

Obviously, she's super-qualified, and I don't know if this mode of thinking had anything to do with it, but Black women have saved the democrats' collective tuchus so many times, especially in the last 3 years, and if this is partly a kind of thank-you (and even partly a "cynical" way to keep that demographic motivated), I'll be Machiavellian and accept those as part of the thought process behind the choice.

Excitement is great and I’m all about that. But votes are what count. So we all have to do our part to make sure that anyone qualified to vote for Biden/Harris gets their butt to the voting booth!

This is a rocket fuel injection into a campaign that was doing well but now is on its way to win this thing, big. You can feel the excitement and buzz. Which is why the right-wing is howling. They know what we know:

This is a kick-ass ticket. Kudos to Biden and Harris. What a team, my Dream Team too.

That is all. I am a happy, happy camper.

This 54 year old southern white guy can’t believe that what I have been desiring for 18 months has actually happened! I was dancing around my garage when I heard. Well, as a 54 year old white guy no one but me would call it dancing!

The base of our party in the south, Florida included, are African Americans. Especially women. They have kept the party here from totally dying over the last 10 years. If for no other reason I wanted a representative of the on the ticket. We are noW finally starting to see a spark in our party here and telling the group responsible for it to keep waiting for your turn was unacceptable. Normally a VP from California would have no impact on Florida. That is not the case now. Not hardly.

Picking her reassembles the Obama coalition that won Florida twice. If we organize and get out the vote we will win it again. And if we win Florida it’s game over.

I’m feeling Really good for the first time in a long time

me and my sisters and cousins have been non-stop texting... but I just saw an article in the Philly Inquirer this evening discussing the black powerbase here in the area -

Black Democrats in Pa. are ‘beaming with pride’ after Biden picked Kamala Harris for vice president

by Jonathan Tamari, Laura McCrystal and Sean Collins Walsh, Posted: 42 minutes ago

/snip

Harris, a Californian whose father is from Jamaica and mother is from India, would be the first woman to serve as vice president. Her selection came after many Democrats urged Biden to pick a Black woman, arguing that the party needs a ticket that reflects its diversity — and that of the country. The imperative only grew in recent months as protests against systemic racism swept the country, drawing in people of all races. ”I’m so excited I can hardly talk,” said Marian Tasco, a former member of Philadelphia City Council. “For us to have an African-American woman be a candidate for vice president, that is just so exciting for me, having worked so long in the political arena.”

Tasco, a longtime leader of the Northwest Coalition political machine, is one of the most influential figures in Philadelphia politics and an expert on voter turnout. She said many Black women, including members of the national sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, will be energized to help the campaign. Harris joined AKA while at Howard University. “These women — the AKAs, the Deltas, and the other organizations — they’re so happy because they worked so hard to make a difference in this country for African-American women and for Black families,” Tasco said. “And that is happening.”

Rogette Harris, chair of the Dauphin County Democrats, said it was “very important” that Biden complete his ticket with a woman of color. “Number one, it was Black voters who pretty much gave him the nomination and he did not ignore that,” said Harris, referring to the South Carolina primary voters who helped revive Biden’s candidacy in February. “It’s time that we’re not just seen but we’re actually heard. And the only way to be heard is to be in positions of power.”

Harris is also a groundbreaking pick for Asian Americans. “Kamala Harris’s story is the story of a changing, inclusive America. At a time of rapid change, she ties all our national threads together,” said a statement from Neil Makhija, a Philadelphia attorney who heads IMPACT, a political group that backs Indian American candidates. “Harris represents the future and promise of this country. Her candidacy is historic and inspiring.”An estimated 1.3 million Indian Americans are expected to vote in this year’s election, including almost 200,000 in Pennsylvania, Makhija said.

Anyone with half a brain, black, white are losing their minds right now. There were several good candidates so this choice was for Biden to lose - thankfully he chose one of the good choices.

I'm behind this selection 100% - let's focus now on the next big issue - taking back our Government!

Why talk about how black people feel about this stupendous moment in history when, for the first time, a black woman is on a major presidential ticket?

What about how the white people feel?

Not trying to imply that meme.

My bad. Please forgive, I realized the faux-pas when you raised it.

I was going around the thinking person's viewpoint. My thoughts are that there were several very obviously talented and understood candidates for Biden to pick and several candidates who would have been a surprise. He chose the former, not the latter. I was deathly afraid he was going to do the "Palin" moment here.

I'm as happy now as when Obama got the nomination in '08!

As a 50 year old white dude, in the middle of Iowa, I couldnt be more excited for our country as I am right now. This gave my hope a HUGE boost!! I voted for Pete in our caucuses, but if Kamala had not bowed out prior it would have been between her and him. Have always liked her.

Also, grats on 10k...I can only dream of that!!

I kinda like her for no particular reason...haven't been paying much attention to the vp race or most things lately. So it is the way apolitical people "like" someone which is anathema among informed voters ..but it is all I got...and given that that that is pretty much how swing voters think, I am looking on that as a positive sign.

I love to feel ~History~ sparkling through the air (when it's good!)! I'm so glad for your joy! I'm happy as a 2nd Gen Greek & Ukrainian-American to see another step forward especially for people who've been here waaay before my grandparents willingly arrived here.

One of my black friends texted me all (naturally) excited. After I texted her back - I remembered 'oh, right! She's 1st or 2nd Generation Jamaican-American!' So she was even extra excited.

Will be listening to their event this afternoon.

Oh, and congrats on your 10,000th post!
