Jan Williams, 47 Percenter, Says Romney's Comments Have Turned Her Into A Democrat

Whittier, Calif., resident Jan Williams, 55, has been a registered Republican voter since she was 18 and always considered herself moderate. She voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 because Sarah Palin gave her pause about John McCain's candidacy.

But after hearing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney dismiss the votes of 47 percent of Americans who don't pay a federal income tax, Williams told The Huffington Post that her transformation into a Democrat is "complete."

During a private $50,000 per plate fundraising dinner in May, Romney said that 47 percent of Americans will "will vote for the president no matter what" because they "believe that they are victims" and "government has a responsibility to care for them." Someone secretly recorded the remarks and they became public this week.

"It was very, very hurtful and stupid thing to say," said Williams. "You're trying to become the president of everyone, not just your little set of cronies."

I keep seeing this. People stand by the GOP as they attack one segment of the population after another. They seem to think they are immune. Then their group becomes the target of attack. How could they not have seen it coming?

Even multi-millionaires are not immune. Some of them are women, some Hispanic. Sooner or later everyone gets a turn at being hated by the GOP.

First they came for the communists (McCarthy, Goldwater, Reagan),
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the socialists (Bush, Bush II, Gingrich, Grover Norquist),
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists (Scott Walker, Chris Christie),
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

Because SOME Republicans will become convinced that Democrats offer better alternatives. Given time and circumstances, that small trickle will grow.

Obama demonstrates that he knows this. It's better to stay even-tempered and honest than to trash your enemies.

Because they will NEVER go away so if you trash them, you only make them more united against you.

don't get it at all until something like this happens. It's not rocket science.

Seriously, how can people just keep going along for years, not seeing what the GOP stands for, and what the GOP really is? It's like they live in some kind of alternate reality

Romney simply told the truth about the GOP, and to me, that truth, the truth that republicans are full of shit, and that they only ever represent the economically privileged, has been as plain as day to me since I was a little kid.

I have never had anything but contempt and distrust for republicans. There are two types of republicans: The republicans working to promote the agenda of wealthy private interests that deliberately deceive people, and the conservative people who are so gullible that they are easily deceived by the republicans who are working to deceive them in order to promote the private interests of the wealthy.

This is why perceptive, reasonable people never trust republicans.

Here's what the deceivers understand, that conservative people are easily led:

“Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”
Hermann Goering

Here's why the deceived conservatives follow the deceivers:

"Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
Martin Luther King Jr.

People who think for themselves are immune to GOP bullshit ~ except that we all seriously suffer from the consequences of the actions of those who are deceived by the GOP. We'll all be suffering the consequences of the Bush era for generations, if not forever.

That said, I'm glad Jan finally figured out what is going on, and I hope she keeps her eyes open from here on out.

parasites unless they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

You would have to be seriously evil, or really, really stupid, to vote for any republican, after watching the GOP presidential candidate so seriously and sincerely explain to a group of really wealthy republicans about how you, and your family, and half of all Americans, are worthless parasites, and not worth the slightest consideration of the republican party.

I'm glad Jan finally got it, better late than never.

I really hope there are a whole lot of people like her that will come to the realization that the GOP is totally lying to them, deceiving them into voting against their own best self-interests, and the best interests of the country and the world.

27. Yeah, this is a common thing among republicans.
Fri Sep 21, 2012, 02:40 PM

They don't question the things that their parents, teachers, priests, TVs, governments, etc, told them were true when they were growing up. And they often have a hard time understanding what it is like to be in another human being's shoes.

They go along, never thinking for themselves, and not caring about other people's unfortunate circumstances, or misfortunes, until some serious extreme personal tragedy puts them in a helpless position.

Then things change. They are the unfortunate ones who need help, and the only place they can find the help they need is from government programs, AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE PROGRAMS WAS INSTITUTED BY DEMOCRATS, PROGRAMS WHOSE CONTINUED EXISTENCE HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY FOUGHT FOR BY DEMOCRATS, DESPITE CONSTANT OPPOSITION BY REPUBLICANS WHO WANT TO SEE THESE PROGRAMS ABOLISHED.

And yes, her story is very sad, and it helps explains how and why she finally came to understand how and why the Democratic party is the group of Americans who are responsible for providing the unconditional assistance she is receiving in her time of need.

Hopefully, other republicans will hear and understand her story, and will consider becoming Democrats and becoming part of our group that is full on dedicated to helping people with very real needs...before they themselves suffer some misfortune, and are forced to rely on the social programs that they voted to abolish over the course of their entire adult lives. If the republicans that Jan previously voted for had all been successful, she would be left to die by them, and the most they would give to her would (maybe) be their wishes that she die a quick and merciful death.

I'm sure everyone here is really glad that Jan is becoming a Democrat, and is sorry that she has suffered such great misfortune, and hope that things continue go better in her life from this point forward.

Isn't this who we Democrats are, and isn't this why we Democrats do what we do? To try to make life easier, and better, for everyone?

I know that this is a primary reason for me being a lifelong hard core progressive Democrat. And for the life of me, I can't understand how anyone could identify with, and belong to, that absolutely horrid group of mean, selfish, greedy individuals who comprise the membership of the GOP. I honestly think a person has to suffer from a serious anti-social personality disorder in order to self-identify as a republican, and identify with the GOP as a group.

she has had genuine tragedy in her life, and meanwhile she has needed and made use of the very support systems that the Republicans have been saying for YEARS they want to get rid of.

She does not exhibit the attitude of "I"ve got mine so screw you", nor the attitude of "I'm deserving but those others aren't". Still, any time she's voted for a Republican in the past thirty years she's been voting against her own self-interest.

I do not get it. I do not get why anyone with more than three or four brain cells would continue to vote Republican if they are not already quite wealthy.

from conversations with conservative folks on SSI, food stamps, etc. and from talking with those conservatives I know who are struggling to make it on low wages, there's a childish disconnect about how the safety net was formed, legislated, funded. A disconnect about labor laws and labor history.

They simply aren't the brightest tools in the shed when when it comes to understanding simple civics. They see the help they are getting ( or not getting ) as a separate entity from government.

They use government to make moral statements, rather than financial ones, because they fail to relate government policy to their own financial lives. Instead, they cast feel-good votes for the guy who wholesomely gushes over Jesus and fetuses while the same guy shames anyone who even thinks about complaining about the Holy Multi-Nationals or thousands of dead and maimed US soldiers and Iraqis.

Look at how FOX kept score on how many times "God" was mentioned at the conventions. To them, the word is more powerful than actually doing anything to help anybody. Just say "God" and you are good. What a childish manipulation, but it works.

These politicians demean and degrade the blue collar, the poor, the sick, the female, the minority, and conservatives eat it up like candy. At some point, the "little" conservative won't even be worth fooling any more if they manage to set enough marginalized groups against each other.

I believe Rmoney may have pushed people to this point. It's almost as if he's a method actor doing it on purpose to wake Americans up.

But, no, the truth is that people remain dumb until their empathy for themselves kicks in.

promoted and encouraged by the Rightwing media.

There are still some really dumb people who think if Rush or Hannity or OReilly say it, it must be true. They think it's against the law for them to lie, while at the same time they believe Rush and FOX are the ONLY ones telling them the truth about the world.

Poor and dependent conservatives honestly believe there's a conspiracy against bejillionaires ( ) like Beck and Murdoch and Rush. They never stop to think it can't be much of a conspiracy if the blowhards are making that much money being "oppressed."

It's an insidious addiction when you're on disability and feeling worthless. Turn on FOX and instantly you're being stroked by warm and fuzzy anti-social rants and bigotry, and told your sociopathy is healthy. At the same time, they try to take away your safety net and you don't even care.

You're so happy to feel "special" and angry at the "others" for a little while, they can HAVE your disability if they need it!

Propaganda works. That's why Rush and Beck make the big bucks.

I think the party is resting too much on 40 year old laurels. It has little new to show as achievements. At least Sen. Robert Byrd can claim that he tried to get the Senate not to rush to war in Iraq. Where were the rest of the dems? The actual liberals in congress (Kucinich, Grayson, et al) get little support from the party and get pushed out while the conceders and cooperators get support. Result? The DP is now to the right of the 1956 GOP.

We can argue this forever and anon but the fact is that this woman did not come TO the DP, she went AWAY from the GOP.
