AOC Only Gets 60 Seconds At Democratic Convention To Deliver Pre-Recorded Message

Forbes

The DNC will air a 60 second pre-recorded message filmed by AOC in her home.

The convention is being held virtually because of the coronavirus, and speakers include former first lady Michelle Obama, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, who will deliver a live speech on Thursday, according to Business Insider.

Other progressive leaders such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are also slated to speak.

It’s unclear if any other speakers are subject to the same time limits, and the DNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.

AOC did not criticize the party directly, tweeting a poem by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays in response: “I only have a minute / Sixty seconds in it / Forced upon me, I did not choose it / But I know that I must use it,” the poem reads.

Ocasio-Cortez is in both the nominating segment on Tuesday and a video on Wednesday. This while many fine colleagues of achievement are given no special role.

CNN: "Ocasio-Cortez among high-profile Latinos participating in Dem. convention"

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, the progressive first-term lawmaker, is one of several high-profile Latinos slated to participate in the Democratic National Convention next week.

Ocasio-Cortez, an early endorser of Bernie Sanders' presidential bid, will be part of a segment nominating the senator from Vermont at the convention on Tuesday night, the officials said, and she also will be featured in a video airing on Wednesday. The congresswoman's participation further highlights the Biden campaign's efforts to bring the progressive wing of the party into the fold.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro will also have roles in next week's event, Democratic officials tell CNN. While the exact schedule is still being finalized, the lineup comes as the party seeks to highlight the diversity of its members and supporters as Joe Biden officially becomes its presidential nominee.

Gov. Lujan Grisham and Sen. Cortez Masto, who were among the early names mentioned as possible contenders for the Democratic vice presidential nomination, will have individual speaking slots at the convention along with California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, who endorsed Biden during the primaries.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, who delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012, will be part of a segment featuring former 2020 presidential candidates.

Several Latino elected officials who endorsed Biden during the primary will also have roles in the convention -- Nevada state Sen. Yvanna Cancela, Long Beach, California, Mayor Robert Garcia and Texas state Rep. Victoria Neave.

"Latinos are an integral part of the fabric of this nation, which is why we are making significant efforts to ensure Latino voices and experiences are highlighted throughout the Democratic National Convention," said Julie Chávez Rodriguez, a senior adviser to the Biden campaign.

She is honored to be a speaker among such distinguished company. And if she can't feel it, her supporters at least should be pleased because it's really all about serving them.

The Democratic Party leadership knows what they're doing and Kasich will, hopefully, lure moderate R's into voting for Biden/Harris and we need all the votes we can get to send the Mango Menace and his criminal enterprise to the unemployment line and into the dustbin of history.l

yes, the media is trying to portray it as a slight, when the opposite is true.

The poem she chose highlights what can be said in that amount of time.

No idea why anyone expected a junior congressperson was going to be featured or something. She's great at using social media to raise her profile, but she's still just learning the ropes as a member of the Democratic Party.

Iowa's first women to represent Iowa in the House Abby Finkenauer 10 months older and Cindy Axne both beat incumbent repubicans in repubican districts in 2018 and they are invisible outside Iowa.

They are in a hell of a fight again this year.

And as an added bonus, there's no risk of going off-message and no risk of going over the allotted time (ie: due to ad-libbing, improvising, or pausing for unnecessarily long applause-line responses, etc.)

I think the DNC was being very generous with the short amount of time that is available for such a compressed convention. Six hours of nightly speakers is reduced to TWO hours.

Fact of the matter is this: Everyone gets less time. And many more don't get to speak AT ALL!!!

These are strange and frightening and difficult and challenging times.

Lincoln’s Gettysburg speech lasted two minutes, but he could have spoken for hours, if he wanted. Edward Everett's Gettysburg speech lasted two hours. He probably was incapable of distilling his remarks to 2 minutes. So, who is remembered today?

It's not the length of the speech. It's the content, and how it grabs you and refuses to turn loose.

I expect OAC to treat us to the best speech we have ever heard at a political convention. I want a speech that will be recited at DEM rallies and printed in books for the next 100 years. One that will be displayed on the walls of homes and offices, even someday the political offices of our opposition party.

I want a speech from the person I trust most to take America's roots back to FDR.

A first term congressperson in a safe blue district wouldn’t normally have that opportunity. That she’s been given any time at all is a boon, and people should be savvy enough to see it.

If there's anyone who doesn't know that phrase, it refers to an empty church where the preacher admonished everyone else to come to church, and it's a waste of time, because only the choir is there to hear it.
