. . . he rigged this ONE return that he rolled out -- to the exclusion of 20 other years of returns that he REFUSES to release -- to make it appear that he's paid a higher rate in the missing years.
It's a transparent dodge and cover-up, distracting the public with this one FIXED return . . .

(CNN) Mitt and Ann Romney took steps to pay more in taxes than he had to last year, despite the Republican nominee's previous statements suggesting he abhors the idea of paying more taxes than required.
According to an announcement by the campaign Friday, the Romneys could have had a lower tax rate than 14.1% in 2011 if they had claimed more of their charitable deductionsan amount that equaled 30% of their income. Romney made $13.7 million mostly off of investment income last year.
However, the Romneys only claimed 16% in charitable deductions, thus keeping their income tax rate higher, in order "to conform" to Romney's previous comments about his tax rate, the statement read Friday . . .
"Gov. Romney has been clear that no American need pay more than he or she owes under the law. At the same time, he was in the unique position of having made a commitment to the public that his tax rate would be above 13%. He directed his preparers to ensure that he is consistent with that statement," a campaign official said in a statement.

"Romney cooked his tax returns to get a politically appealing rate" is more damning than anything about the taxes themselves.

(1,883 posts)By releasing an average of the last 20 years of returns, it is very likely that he paid a higher rate in the first ten years that would make paying little or no taxes in the last ten years. We might be freeloaders sucking off the teet of the government, but some of us can smell a con artist from a mile away.

(50,254 posts)The Romney campaign themselves admit the tax returns are manipulated to get the 'right' percentage and yet they seem to think that's just fine and the public should take this 20 year pathetic summary as fact.

(1,435 posts)the 14.1% he is taking now.

(50,254 posts)it means nothing in reality, it is a manipulated number. His returns from 2000 - 2009 must be horrific in terms of what they would reveal about the man, his methodology and the truth that there are years he paid NO income tax and very little capital gains tax. I am still betting he took advantage of the illegal tax shelter amnesty in 2009 which is why he CAN'T release his returns.

My mother is not easily flabbergasted by the antics of politicians. She thinks I get too angry about this stuff. I'm staying with her during a brief stopover for the Holidays.
She was flabbergasted by the audacity of this one from the Romneys.

(61,588 posts)And I strongly suspect that Romney jiggered his net income to a very low amount, so he's paying 14% on a whole lot less than his actual income. I am not impressed.

Thank you CNN, for being on this.
