(21,925 posts)The hosts of political talk shows never seem to react. Maybe they should each be mailed a footnoted brief with attached exhibits, special delivery.

(9,033 posts)The brief window, after the seating of Senator Franken, and before the death of Senator Kennedy, was never really open, because of scum like Joe LIEberman.

(7,188 posts)I rail against this every time I hear it. The President NEVER had 60 votes in the Senate; he had the Dems and LIEberman, Landrieu, and the rest of the Blue Dogs.

(17,505 posts)Dems don't vote in a block like zombies. They don't vote against legislation they created themselves, or if all their amendments get included. (are you listening Senator Burr.... you jerk?)

(2,424 posts)We are conditioning an entire generation into believing that filibuster is the norm.
It isn't. Or it wasn't.
To me, this issue has equal value to the appointment of Supreme Court Justices.
Our legislative body is paralyzed because of it. The office of the President is greatly diminished because of it. To solve America's problems, the mitigation of filibuster abuse has to be the first step.

(9,033 posts)at a time of many crises, the Republicans decided to do nothing so they could put one man out of a job.

(53,661 posts)Not what we imagine he has. Thanks for that link with the report. And that's why we BEG people to get out and vote, instead of standing to the side and telling us it's not worth. Americans created this by leaving the fray and surrendering ground to the GOP, state after state, legislature, etc. They don't want to go and confront these folks in person at planning meeting, churches, etc to change their minds. This is a solid GOP voting block that he is dealing with and it's what happens close to home that makes things happen or not happen in D.C.

(47,992 posts)nearly completely uninformed on the issue facts themselves and that applies all of the way across the political spectrum.

(50,254 posts)Lieberman and Blanche Lincoln and the guy with the dead squirrel on his head from Nebraska always announced they were backing the filibusters, and voted over and over and over again against cloture.
Not meaning to disrespect the sign...just pointing out that the truth is even worse.

(10,894 posts)I had to look that up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Senators_from_Nebraska January 3, 2009 - present: both Mike Johanns (RepubliCON) and Ben Nelson (DemocRAT).

(5,953 posts)I thought they only had 57, and had to pull in Sanders and Lieberman (as in 'Lieberman the guy who was McCain's ORIGINAL pick for VP), and Snowe to get the first healthcare bill passed. Then Kennedy died, they lost one vote and had to pass the affordable care act using reconciliation...which nearly didn't pass due to a few House Democrats voting no.

(11 posts)Fortunately for us, Dems don't vote in blocks. We actually have our own opinions and see the whole picture - which sometimes affects the way we vote.
GOPs do not think for themselves unfortunately, they vote together to make things happen.
I'm torn about what is for the best and what works the best.

(1,185 posts)"to make things happen" into the end zone. Six points. That's like saying we all come to the huddle with a new plan to run the field and meanwhile the other team has gone downfield, we're still discussing 7 different plays. Lining up with a cool play for the extra point punt protection? As Liberal as it all sounds, it's not working.

(5,518 posts)I would say the Democrats never had a filibuster proof majority because some of their members are not truly Dems.
The Senate has a built in advantage for Red States. NY and California get 2 senators and Montana and Idaho also get 2. If you look at the breakdowns. Many of the most populist states are blue and the smallest states are red. The net result is many more Senator seats have a built in red bias.
Dems face the choice of conceding these seats or competing for them with DINOS. While it looked like a majority, the Dem caucus was handicapped with jackasses like Ben Nelson in Nebraska. He is maddening but the alternative is to have the seat blood red

(21,925 posts)She was interviewing Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham and Durbin had to argue against both Crowley and Graham on this. Durbin had to explain the prolonged illnesses and deaths of Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd to a journalist who should know this. Crowley also was acting as a Republican spokesperson instead of a journalist and said there was nothing in Romney's tax returns as though she had seen them. And this right wing partisan masquerading as a journalist will be a debate moderator.

(6,160 posts)President Obama had a Filibuster-proof Majority for 72 Days
The Senate had 60 sitting Democrats only from September 24, 2009 to February 4, 2010, the day on which Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts was sworn in.
Senate Calendar January 21, 2009 - December 31, 2009
17 days out of session from September 24 thru December 31
Senate Calendar January 1, 2010 - February 4, 2010
12 days out of session from January 1 thru February 4
From September 24, 2009 to February 4, 2010, the President had a filibuster-proof majority for 72 days.
